General Description: Local Roots is a 7-ish acre diversified vegetable farm located in the Snoqualmie Valley, near the town of Carnation. We sell at several farmers markets in Seattle, to local restaurants, and we offer a 70 member CSA.
Internship Starts: April 1 or May 1 Internship Ends: October-November Number of Interns: 5 App Deadline: We have filled all our 2010 internships. If you are interested in interning for 2011, please contact us in fall of 2010. Minimum Length of Stay: 6 months
Meals: We cook and eat lunch together. All the produce you can eat, plus some staples, will be provided.
Skills Desired: No previous farming experience is necessary, just enthusiasm and a serious desire to learn how to run a small-scale, sustainable farm. Ideal interns will love to cook and eat, be easy going, eager to learn, and are not shy about asking questions.
Educational Opportunities: Local Roots is a new farm - 2007 was our first year in operation. We are building our farm and our business model and we hope to share our ongoing growth and experience with interns who are seriously considering a life of farming. All aspects of farming and business operation will be open to interns' participation. Interns will plant, cultivate, harvest, work at farmers markets, participate in building projects, and learn farm equipment operation and maintenance.
Stipend: $400-700/month depending on experience and length of stay.
Housing: Full-season interns will be offered on-farm housing in trailers. Part-time/short term interns can stay on the farm in a tent - outdoor kitchen and hot shower are provided.
Preferred method Of Contact: Email
Internship Details: Interns will be fully involved with all aspects of farming, marketing, and business planning. We work 6 days a week, 60+ hours a week, but there is time to hang out, swim in the river, and cook delicious food. Learning is hand-on and self-directed and we believe that those who intend to start their own farms will get the most out of this internship. Our number one goal is to provide interns with the skills and confidence to start their own farm. |
