A feature in the San Francisco Chronicle begins an ongoing exploration of the potential for producing food in the urban area. The area is not alone in looking into the topic: the American Planning Association has encouraged its professional members nationwide to help build stronger local food systems. Several cities around the country have taken actions to strengthen local food production by implementing local purchasing policies, and San Francisco has also taken steps in this direction. Groups of activists are also taking action to enhance local food production, by asking permission to put temporary gardens on privately owned vacant lots within the city.
