General Description: Big Island Farms is an organic permaculture farm located on the Hamakua coast of Hawaii Island, five miles from Waipio Valley and Honokaa town. With over 60 acres of land accessible to us, 40 of which are made up of macadamia nut orchards, we are able to create a biodiverse environment which promotes a healthy and and holistic lifestyles. As a farm our goals are to create a sustainable living environment that promote self growth while also forming a stronger connection with land and community surrounding us.

Meals: Big Island Farms offers healthy, creative, cuisine, that is both nutritious and artistic. Meals through out the program are provided five days a week three times a day with food available, but not prepared on the weekends. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are prepared and served by Farm Chef Michael Rodriguez-Reyes. We try to use as many fresh items taken directly from our gardens as possible in all of our meals. Lastly the food we provide is organic and all vegetarian with the option for both vegan and gluten-free meals.

Skills Desired: No work experience is required but we aim to find like minded people who are enthusiastic about expanding their knowledge in their respected fields.

Educational Opportunities: Three months gives interns a generous space to make substantial strides where they choose to apply their guided efforts. Projects can be more ambitious within the full internship as well as earn a higher budget. This will be the perfect program for any college students requiring a full 12-week internship program in the upcoming fall school year. Completing a self-directed/self-elected project allows one to develop and document quantifiable skills and personal assets that will lead to future jobs, successful projects, and realized possibilities Internship Projects: Citrus, avocado, mango, coco, orchards planning. Farmer market products. Smoothies, juices, preserving. Greenhouse design/builds, facilities. Bee box, owl roost carpentry, animal projects. Property beautification, landscaping, aroma infusing. Space making, architectural design courses. Master planning. Recreation design/build projects. Macadamia nut orchards inter-cropping, and fertilization. Earthworks, swales, terracing, walls, platforms, ponds.


Housing: We house all of our interns in barrack style tents which are complete with windows, doors, over head lights and electricity. Each intern is provided with a full bed frame and a mattress pad as well as dry storage for their belongings personal belongings.
