General Description: Carnation Farms is a nonprofit organization on a mission to transform the way that people want to eat. Located on the historic 818 acre farm, we celebrate delicious and nutritious food produced in a sustainable manner by providing inspirational and educational experiences that positively affect the health, the environment, and local economies. We develop the next generation of food citizens and grow new farmers.

Skills Desired: Applicants should be committed to becoming a farmer and eager to learn in order to reach their goals. They should be comfortable following instruction and guidance from the Director of Sustainable Agriculture Education and other Carnation Farms staff, working outdoors in adverse weather conditions, operating heavy equipment, and learning in a classroom academic environment. Preference is given to applicants who demonstrate experience in one or more seasons of farming or in an agricultural food production setting. The program requires physical work, including the ability to lift 50 pounds. Since shared onsite housing is provided for free, the applicant must work and live cooperatively and harmoniously in community. Carnation Farms will accept three farmers-in-training for 2019.

Educational Opportunities: The Mentorship spans an 8 month growing season, giving the farmers-in-training a full spectrum of training from soil and seed to harvest and table. Those who complete the program have the option to present their own business plan to Carnation Farms staff and, if accepted and negotiated, utilize the farm's land, mentors, and production resources the following year.

Stipend: Farmers-in-training will be paid a stipend of $1,000 (gross before taxes) every other week. Carnation Farms provides workers compensation insurance and company-paid holidays. Health insurance and other benefits normally provided to full-time employees are not provided.

Housing: Housing (rent and utilities) on Carnation Farms property is provided at no charge, available April 13 to December 31, 2019. Those choosing not to live onsite will need to make their own living arrangements at their own cost. Because of space limitations, we are unable to provide housing for spouses, partners, or children. Also, we are unable to accommodate pets.

Internship Details: Carnation Farms is passionate about providing education, hands-on experiences, and inspiration to the next generation of farmers and leaders in agriculture. The Mentorship in Sustainable Agriculture is one of our most important mission-based programs. We are grow new farmers, equipping them with the knowledge and skills they need to make a positive difference in the sustainable production of healthful, organic food. After spending nearly a year on our farm, our intent is that they will be agents of change in improving the food system in local communities.
