National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) staff members Luke Freeman, Nina Prater, Guy Ames, and Margo Hale will present on assessing your soil quality and site needs for vegetables and cut flowers, fruit trees and berries, and livestock and poultry. The workshop will include presentations and a field walk discussing farm site attributes and site needs for various farm enterprises. Please wear weather-appropriate clothing and farm-appropriate shoes.

Conference: Vermont Armed to Farm Veteran Training
National Center for Appropriate TechnologyNCAT is organizing and presenting this workshop.
Location: Craftsbury Common, Vermont

Registration Info: NCAT's week-long Armed to Farm training allows veterans and their spouses to experience sustainable, profitable small-scale farming enterprises and explore agriculture as a viable career. Farm tours, hands-on experience, and interactive classroom instruction give participants a strong foundation in the basic principles of operating a sustainable farm. Participants learn about business planning, budgeting, recordkeeping, marketing, livestock production, fruit and vegetable production, and more. In addition, attendees gain a network of supportive farmer-veterans and agricultural advisors. NCAT Sustainable Agriculture specialists will teach the training sessions. Additional contributors will include staff from Sterling College and USDA agencies, plus experienced crop and livestock producers. Applications are due by May 3, 2019.

Conference: Under the Hood of Your Soils

There will be classroom instruction and a tour of Montana Highland Lamb farm in Whitehall, owned and operated by NCAT specialist Dave Scott. Learn how regenerative grazing can increase soil health and reduce the need for fertilizer and irrigation. Information on USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) programs will also be provided.
