Local Marketing, Processing, and Distribution

Sell it before you sow it. In other words, it is critical to consider the many marketing possibilities within your reach well before you harvest, or even plant, a crop. Consumers increasingly seek foods with the right health, environmental and social attributes. Retailers, wholesalers, processors are responding to this trend by forging new relationships with farmers and promoting differentiated products. Farmers and ranchers have new and evolving opportunities to add value through processing livestock into meat and whole fruits and vegetables into kitchen-ready, pre-cleaned slices, for instance. What marketing option is right for you? How do you navigate the food safety standards and regulations for processed foods?

How can you connect with other farmers, processors, buyers, and technologies to tap into larger regional markets? The resources below can guide you through a web of marketing options, from farmers markets, Community Supported Agriculture, and internet marketing, to selling to institutions, and the processing and distribution issues associated with these options.
