General Farm Description: Apple Creek Farm is a diversified, organic livestock farm located in Bowdoinham, Maine. The farm produces grass-fed & organic meats and eggs year-round for our community. Farm products are available through on-farm order & pick-up, farmers market and select local food retailers. Located 40 minutes north of Portland Maine, Bowdoinham is a beautiful small town adjacent to the 295 corridor. Despite its size our town is incredibly supportive of the strong community of farmers here. Internship Details:
Apple Creek Farm is hiring for an assistant farm manager for the 2021 season, starting March 30 and ending October 30. We are a diversified farm, and expect this team member to work closely with owners to complete all aspects of certified organic livestock, egg and hay production including:
Perform daily livestock chores including feeding, watering and health monitoring
Wash, sort, and pack eggs for markets and wholesale accounts
Assist with daily pasture rotations including setting up, taking down, moving and electrifying temporary fences
Assist in livestock health maintenance throughout season
Assist with hay production including loading, stacking and unloading hay on wagon and in barn.
Assist with infrastructure and construction projects including fencing, general carpentry and painting
Assist with brush and tree clearing
Compensation & Hours:
We are offering 40 hours per week. Our ideal schedule would be five 8-hour days (Tuesday – Saturday). A two-week paid trial period will begin from date of hire. Days of the week and total number of hours during the trial period is negotiable. Rate of hourly pay starts at $13.50 and is commensurate with experience. Our compensation package includes $35 worth of meat and eggs per week. There is opportunity for hours, rate of pay and duration of employment to increase as the season progresses and experience and knowledge are gained.
Required Qualifications:
Interest in organic livestock farming
Enjoys animals, dogs in particular
Willingness to work within our farm system and flexibility in working with diverse personalities
Genuine curiosity and willingness to learn
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with livestock including cows, goats, sheep and/or poultry
Experience with moveable fencing and/or pasture management
Basic carpentry and/or chainsaw experience
Experience with tractor operation

Physical Demands:
Farming is both rewarding and demanding work. The successful candidate will be able to monitor and prepare for the predicted weather and remain calm and focused on the task at hand. Safety is important to us and as such a successful candidate will learn to operate equipment safely. It is necessary for the candidate to be able to:
Maintain a brisk and focused working pace all day;
Move objects up to 50 pounds repeatedly;
Spend long hours walking;
Perform repetitive and monotonous tasks;
Work outside for the majority of the day, despite inclement weather
Educational Opportunities: Both of the farmers learned to farm (in part) through the apprentice model. We are committed to conveying what we've learned through an employee manual, on-farm training period of two weeks and through working alongside this key member of our team. Our goal is to quickly enable this person to take on day-to-day management.
Skills Desired: We're looking for someone with curiosity and genuine interest in farming. If you've worked outdoors in a four season climate, have experience in a restaurant or fast-paced retail job, then it is likely those skills will benefit you in this position.
