Internship information
General Farm Description: Boston Area Gleaners is a nonprofit organization that rescues surplus crops from local farms for people in need. Together with volunteers, we harvest high-quality fruits and vegetables that would otherwise go to waste and distribute the nutritious produce to agencies serving families facing food insecurity. Our dedication to building a reliable supply chain of agricultural surplus has allowed us to supply the hunger relief sector with more than 2.7 million pounds of produce since we were founded in 2004. This year we hope to break one million pounds of gleaned produce over the course of just one growing season. If this sounds like a fun and exciting challenge to you, then apply to be a part of the team that makes this dream a reality!CRAFT Member Farm? Yes

Internship Details:
Boston Area Gleaners is a regional and national leader in the field of gleaning and farm-level surplus management. This is a dynamic and emerging field around the world which requires specific knowledge in many areas including: farming, produce distribution and wholesaling, logistics, food hubs, food safety, volunteer management, non-profit management, food access and food justice, hunger relief, and emerging models of addressing food insecurity. As a non-profit organization with an educational component to our work, we are committed to training the next generation of gleaners.
Our apprenticeship program is designed to give a comprehensive overview of the regional food system in New England and focuses on how gleaning can take existing resources in the current food system to create positive change and innovative food distribution models. The knowledge gained from this apprenticeship can be applicable to many other related fields and is a great way to get a foot in the door with our organization and other local organizations doing similar work. Additionally, this apprenticeship is a great introduction to our field of food rescue and local food system development. This apprenticeship is similar to a farm apprenticeship in that it is very hands-on in nature.
Educational Opportunities: Rigorous pre-season training covering a variety of topics including, food-safety, first aid, volunteer management, produce quality, inventory management, logistics, etc. Opportunity to attend weekly CRAFT meetings and volunteer with other partner agencies and farms.
Skills Desired: Candidates for this position should be passionate about the food system and enjoy working with a team, hard work and learning new things. Visit our website to learn more about the specific skills we are looking for. https://www.bostonareagleaners.org/job-opportunities.html
