Internship information
General Farm Description: Root 'N Roost Farm is a small-scale, diversified, permaculture-based, human, animal, and renewable energy powered farmstead. Since 2010 we have been developing our property to provide us, our local community and customers with an abundance of naturally grown fresh, delicious and nutritious fruits, vegetables, herbs, and we also grow over 100 varieties of plants that we sell to local schools, beautification projects and local home gardeners. Over the years we have kept pigs, chickens, turkeys and bees to help us work the land. This 2019 season we are not raising any livestock animals so that we can instead put our energy into establishing our nursery stock, as well as more perennial plantings and permaculture projects around our property. We tread lightly on our growing spaces, avoiding the use of gas-powered large machinery wherever possible in favor of hand tools and solar-electric powered implements, and we never use synthetic chemicals on our crops. We enjoy hosting interns, WWOOFers and other work-traders who are interested in learning about our farming lifestyle and practices. Hashomer Hatzair is a Progressive Youth Movement that was established 100 years ago and specializes in youth-led experiential Jewish education. Based on the values of equity, community, and social responsibility, our camps and year-round activities encourage youth to shape their communities and find personal relevance in Judaism, Jewish people hood, and Israel. In addition to our year round programming, Camp Shomria engages all of our year round participants in our campsite in Upstate New York. Camp Shomria has reconnected with its roots from the kibbutz movement and now grows over 20 varieties of vegetables, chickens for their eggs, some sheep and goats, and 110 solar panels supplying 98 percent of the electricity. Most importantly, our campers experience the beautiful wilderness of the Catskills, learn important scouting skills, and truly make life-long friends and experience true community.CRAFT Member Farm?
