General Farm Description: Two neighboring farms are collaborating to co-host summer internships. Camp Celo is a family-run summer camp for kids ages 7-14, located on an operating farm in western North Carolina. The kids experience the mountains and farm as part of a camp community that shares the Quaker values of simplicity, equality, care for the Earth, integrity, peace, and community. The Camp Celo farm is 16 acres of mixed woods, pastures, and a 1.5 acre vegetable farm, managed following organic, biodynamic, and no-till practices. In addition to providing food for the Camp dining hall in the summer, the garden provides opportunities for campers to experience working on a farm. The garden is host to numerous children’s activities and chores during the Camp season June 11- August 5 (note: only during about half of the internship dates). Arthur Morgan School is a small, staff-run, alternative boarding and day school for 27 students in grades 7-9, next door to Camp Celo. Our 100 acre campus consists mainly of woods and meadows, with creeks and a pond, as well as some pasture and a 1 acre vegetable garden with perennial flowers and some fruit trees; it is surrounded by National Forest. The school fosters a loving, energetic living/learning community dedicated to supporting individuality while teaching group cooperation. A balance is sought between academics, outdoor activities, and meaningful work. Experiential learning and responsible participation in community are emphasized throughout. Boarding students live in homes with two or three staff members, and the entire community actively shares work, study, play, and decision-making. School will be in session in the months of April and May, at the start of the internship, then break for summer. During the month of August, the staff will return to campus, making preparations for the coming school year and the students’ return at the start of September.

Job Description:

Two neighboring organizational farms are hiring shared summer garden interns. The garden interns will work alongside the Garden Managers in all aspects of garden care and garden-related school/camp programming. Garden work includes seeding, weeding, bed preparation, pest and disease management, harvesting, washing and more. School/Camp programming includes leading children ages 7-15 through garden chores and activities. There may also be opportunities to care for livestock (cows, chickens, turkeys, and goats). This position is designed to be an educational internship to help deepen the intern’s understanding of organic farming methods. Expect the work to be difficult and rewarding.

This internship is 20 hours/week. The internship will be hosted by Camp Celo and Arthur Morgan School, so the work hours will be divided equally between the two neighboring farm locations. Each farm is managed separately, and the internship management will be divided by the leaders of both farms, with regular communication between them.

Educational Opportunities: This is an ideal position for someone just starting out in sustainable agriculture or who is looking to deepen their skills and experience. We practice organic, biodynamic, no-till, and regenerative farming methods, so it is a great place to learn about those topics! We are also members of a thriving CRAFT network through Organic Growers School, so there will be plenty of opportunities to see other farms and learn from them.

Meals: While some lunches may be provided, cooking and meals will primarily be the responsibility of the interns.

Stipend: Compensation and Benefits: Housing: Intern will receive lodging in a room in a cabin shared with the other intern. The house is on the Arthur Morgan School campus. Utilities are included. Rent is valued at $400/month. Networks and assistance are in place to help them find outside gig/hourly work in the community.
