General Farm Description: Charlestown Farm is a sustainable vegetable and small fruit farm located 30 miles northwest of Philadelphia in Phoenixville, PA. At the heart of our Farm is our 150-member non-certified organic CSA, beginning its 22nd year of operation. We also participate in a highly successful local farmers' market (www.phoenixvillefarmersmarket.org). Sustainability is key in our lives, our soils and our systems. We seek to reconnect people to their food source and the quality of locally grown and raised food. The farm consists of 40 acres with 15 acres currently in cultivation. Assistant Farm Manager- We are looking for a person who has apprenticed on another farm or several farms who is ready to take a leadership positions to assist the manager while learning management skills. The ideal person will grow into full management and share in the profits of the farm.
Responsibilities and opportunities for learning include crop planning, harvest planning and management, weed and pest control and irrigation, CSA distribution and farmers’ market sales.
Educational Opportunities: One of our highest priorities is to provide comprehensive sustainable farming education from planning and seeding to weed management, soil fertility, harvest and crop planning. We conduct weekly educational field walks for the farm team.
Skills Desired: First and foremost we seek people with a strong desire to learn about growing great vegetables as members of our farm team. Prior experience at a working farm and/or greenhouse for this position is required as well as experience using tractors and implements. An ideal candidate is self-motivated, physically fit and likes to work outdoors. We seek individuals with an excellent work ethic: organization, attention to detail, high integrity, energy, enthusiasm, effective communication skills and the ability to work in all weather conditions and finally, a sense of humor. We all like to laugh while we work!
Meals: We do not provide meals, but apprentices receive vegetables and eggs from the farm.
Stipend: Monthly stipend is flexible and commensurate with relevant experience, plus additional pay for working the farmers market once a month. Base pay for full season assistant manager starts at $2,000 month
Housing: Housing is provided in a lovely renovated stone carriage house with a large gourmet kitchen, washer/dryer, dishwasher, grill, and utilities included. We also have a lovely pond and hiking trails around the property and through adjoining park land. The house has high speed Internet for apprentice's use.
