General Farm Description: About the farm: Located atop of Abbot Hill, in the town of Wilton of southern New Hampshire, Temple-Wilton Community Farm ranges over more than 130 acres of pasture, hayfields, vegetable fields, and woods. Internship Details:
We are looking for a Dairy and Animal Care Assistant that will work with our lead dairy farmer. Responsibilities include milking, care for our dairy herd and keeping our chicken flocks happy and healthy. Other tasks include preparing eggs for market, fencing, pasture care, and making hay and compost.
We currently care for 30 animals in the herd and milk 17 cows. We are a certified raw milk dairy and keep the horns on our cows. Calves stay with the herd and nurse their mothers for up to four months. We maintain up to 300 hens and roosters.
This position has the potential to become a permanent position as a leading farmer.
Educational Opportunities: You will gain experience and competence in the skills necessary in order to manage a dairy operation.
Skills Desired: Skill, attitude, and Qualifications: - The assistant farmer must be interested in holistic animal care, biodynamic principles, and native knowledge. - Community-minded: we are a member-owned cooperative farm and our CSA members are very involved. The assistant farmer must be respectful, open and friendly. - Two years of relevant experience on a dairy farm is preferred, with a minimum of one year. - Experience working with tractors and machinery is a plus.
Meals: Meals are not provided. However, you will have access to all farm produced food (vegetables, eggs, milk, yogurt, cheese, meat).
Stipend: We offer $20,000 - $24,000 per year, depending on experience.
Housing: We provide a private bedroom in a beautiful apartment with other farmworkers. The housing includes a shared kitchen, shower, and access to wifi.
