Internship information
General Farm Description: Dig Acres is a 20 acre farm run by the Dig Restaurant in the Black Dirt region of New York - an incredibly fertile and unique muck soil found in very few parts of the country. We grow a diverse array of vegetables primarily sold to our restaurant and other large wholesale accounts with a focus on restaurant grade quality and quantity. While we sell mixed vegetable boxes akin to CSAs to certain vendors, our primary outlets are wholesale and we do not operate at any farmers markets. The farm is in the process of becoming certified organic, though has grown according to the program since its inception in 2017. Given our farm's unique structure under the umbrella of a larger restaurant group, our focus is providing an experiential learning environment where team members are able to take on tasks normally delegated to more experienced crew members, in particular regards to machinery and tractor work. Typically, our farm has around 7-8 members on its crew who take part in all aspects of the farm including one farm manager and two field managers.

Internship Details:

We are looking to add three members to our team this year – two crew members with at least one-two seasons of experience to begin in April/May and one apprentice with no experience to begin in June. Team members will take part of all farm tasks including tractor operation and maintenance, greenhouse management, transplanting, harvest, wash/pack, etc. Depending on the conditions of the year, our team may host work days and tours for our restaurant and corporate teams throughout the summer where team members will be given leadership opportunities and connect with how our restaurants integrate to our farm. There may also be other events hosted by the farm that our team will work to prepare for. We typically work 8AM – 5/6PM, but we ask that crew members be open to some longer hours as necessary throughout the season (overtime is paid over 40 hours). Crew members should be able to lift 50 pounds and work in all weather conditions. Team members are encouraged but not required to attend Mid-Hudson Valley CRAFT events. Crew members will be paid $15.00/HR with $22.50/HR overtime over 40 hours, and apprentices will be paid $14.00/HR with $21.00/HR overtime over 40 hours.

Educational Opportunities: CRAFT, other regional training events through our partner organizations, in-field training, semi-formal classroom sessions

Skills Desired: For our two crew positions we are looking for 1-2 years of experience farming, for our apprenticeship we have no requirement.

Meals: Team members are generally expected to bring their own lunches in, however, our farm will purchase lunch for team members a few times a month from local restaurants. In case of long days the farm will provide dinner. Crew members also receive free meals at any Dig restaurant location (we have 30 restaurants between Boston, New York City, Rye, and Philadelphia).

Stipend: Crew members will be paid $15.00/HR with $22.50/HR overtime over 40 hours, and apprentices will be paid $14.00/HR with $21.00/HR overtime over 40 hours.

Housing: Unfortunately we are unable to offer housing at this time.
