Dooley Creek Farm is a diverse 100 acre regenerative family farm located in the Crystal River Valley near Carbondale, CO. Our focus is soil-building through managed grazing and composting. We offer direct-to-consumer premium quality beef, chicken, pork, eggs.
We are seeking an individual who is interested in regenerative agriculture to intern with us this season.
Housing: Rustic on-site housing possible or full trailer/camper hook-up available
Compensation: Monthly stipend plus some meals and meat/veggies from the farm. Possibility for intern to start their own farm-related enterprise on the premises if right candidate and/or transition to full-time position.
Schedule: Flexible. Typically would be 40 hrs/week with two days off. There may be 14 hour days if a project requires it and there may be short, easy days. There is a lot of recreation opportunity in this area and we would want you to be able to explore and have some fun on your days off.
Timeline: 3-12 months
Expectations and Learning Opportunities:
Intern will be expected to participate in daily operations including: building electric fence paddocks and moving cattle herd to a new paddock daily and ensuring they have access to minerals and water; feeding/watering/moving broiler chickens daily; tending to brooders; feeding/watering/moving laying hens daily; building pig paddocks and moving pigs as needed and ensuring they have feed and water at all times; irrigating. Intern will be expected to operate a tractor and skid steer on a regular basis (previous experience preferred but willing to train).
Intern will also participate in other periodic farm activities and special projects which may include: developing a market-style garden, planting fruit trees, repairing fences, chicken processing, helping design new infrastructure and systems, implementing a free-choice mineral program, constructing chicken shelters, tending to and processing Thanksgiving turkeys, marketing/planning sessions, developing silvopasture, selling goods at farmer’s markets/farm stands, delivering goods to customers and vendors, completing a poultry processing facility, haying, managing/monitoring operations on leased properties, etc.
Apart from learning the nuts and bolts of small-scale regenerative beef, pork and poultry production, you will be exposed to all aspects of running a farm from a business perspective. We may set you loose brainstorming a new system or project. Our goal is to equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to successfully achieve your own agricultural goals and dreams. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, hard-working, takes initiative, and wants to own or operate a for-profit grass-based livestock farm in their future.
Requirements:
Must be healthy and able to do manual labor on a daily basis in a variety of adverse conditions and weather. Some previous agricultural/farming experience preferred. Must be willing to be involved in all stages of production, including humane slaughtering and processing of animals. Must be committed, hard-working, a team player, eager to learn, dependable and respectful.

Skills Desired: Some ag experience preferred, including tractor and skid-steer operation, although will train the right person. Must be able to follow instructions and work independently as well as with others. Must be able to provide good customer service.
Meals: Some meals plus a meat and veggie allowance from the farm.
Stipend: Yes - $750/month. Plus housing.
