Internship information
General Farm Description: Essex Farm is a 1,500 acre diversified farm producing a full-diet, CSA-style share. We farm grass-fed dairy and beef, pastured pork, chickens and eggs, organically-grown fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes, and value-added meat, dairy, and vegetable products. We strive to create food with attention to taste, health, and ethics. A team of a dozen farmers, three draft horses, and four diesel tractors powers our farm.

Internship Details:

We are seeking a farmer to join our vegetable team for the harvest season and potentially beyond.

Applicants should:
Be able to repeatedly lift 50+ pounds. A lot of our work is done by hand. It is physically taxing. That’s part of the fun.
Be willing to work from 6 am to 6 pm. We make hay while the sun shines, but we also harvest the onions once they’re pulled and we dig the potatoes when they’re ready. Sometimes our days go long. Be ready for it.
Be flexible with an ever-changing set of priorities. We make plans, but then those plans change based off of weather, labor, and the other teams’ needs. Because we are a diversified farm, our plans don’t always go how we want them to–sometimes the sheep get out, and sometimes you will have to help.
Be ready and willing to do the work that needs to be done.
Be self-directed, quick learners . Sometimes you’ll work all day in teams, and sometimes you’ll work all day alone.
Be ready to laugh: at our jokes, at our mistakes, at yourself, and with others.

At Essex Farm, you can expect to:
Harvest, wash, and pack fruits and vegetables
Weed whenever we’re not doing something else
Support other teams. This could mean you might eviscerate chickens, set sheep fencing, pack wholesale orders, or milk cows.

Experience in vegetable farming and equipment (tractor, skidsteer) operation is preferred, but not required.
