Internship Details:
Etta Place Cider is Utah’s first orchard-based hard cider producer. We produce award-winning alcohol and offer our guests adult beverages, fine foods and vacation experiences through our tours and tastings. Our team takes pride in sharing our enthusiasm for local food, beverages and Capitol Reef Country history and information with our guests.
We have planted over 500 fruit trees, mostly traditional hard cider cultivars and heritage dessert apples. We use sustainable, permaculture and organic methods, adapted for our high desert/mountain climate.
What you’ll learn
Orchard management, basic beekeeping, farm-to-bottle cider and mead making, sensory analysis skills and a foundation for ag-tourism marketing and sales. Depending on the intern’s interests and prior skills, additional opportunities include an introduction to proprietary brewery software used by 20% of US breweries and brewery/winery laboratory skills.
What you’ll be doing
Ongoing orcharding tasks: irrigation, mowing, pest management, tree planting, propagation and harvest. Beekeeping: hive installation and monitoring. Cider-making: all aspects from crush, fermentation, sensory analysis, and bottling. Ag-tourism: direct retail sales, lead tours and tastings.
Internship will be paid, 20 hours per week. Weekend hours will be required. Candidate must pass the required state food handlers’ and alcohol servers’ on-line classes in the first week. End of season retention bonus. Must be 21 or over and able to lift 60 lbs.
Housing: we do not have housing available. Because we know that short-term rentals are nearly unobtainable in our vacation destination, we are willing to host a fully self-contained RV or van on our farm and provide full hook-ups. We do have livestock and herding dogs that provide the general farm charm and nuisances. Our farmstead is located within a walkable block to the center of town and about a mile from our cidery.
In your free time: we are in the heart of Utah’s red rock country in the gateway town to Capitol Reef National Park. Recreation opportunities abound in all seasons, like hiking, canyoneering, mountain biking and backpacking. We emphasize a flexible life-work balanced schedule so you can explore all this area has to offer. You may also choose to seek seasonal work with our many local tourism-centered businesses in Torrey. You can volunteer with several non-profits or Capitol Reef National Park. Or you can enjoy leisurely hammock tending in our orchards.
Educational Opportunities: farm-to-table cider production, beginning with tree propagation and orcharding skills to fermentation, marketing and sales. A well-qualified candidate may also learn some winery lab skills.
Skills Desired: Must be able to lift 60 lbs.
