General Farm Description: Full season internship with two complementary, multi-generational, women-owned small organic family farms. Many opportunities for learning and leadership within a great community! Each week, interns will split their time between the two farms. Laughing Crow Farm is a 25 year old business operating on a historic 40 acre farm. Full Tilth Farm is managed by two former Laughing Crow apprentices, now in their 8th year of farming. Laughing Crow has about two acres in annual vegetables, specializing in storage crops. Full Tilth grows about an acre of mixed vegetables (lots of tomatoes) and about an acre of berries, propagates plant starts in greenhouses, and raises a small flock of laying hens. Laughing Crow is also associated with Bainbridge Vineyards, a 6-acre organic vineyard making all its own wines on site. The two farms use a mixture of draft horses, tractor and hand power, and sell our products at local farmers markets, via CSA, and to restaurants. All organic practices used. The farms are about 15 min (driving) apart from each other, are a short ferry ride from Seattle and close to great hiking on the Olympic Peninsula. Internship Details:
Interns will split their time between the two farms, working 3 days/week during March and 5 days/week April-Oct (Sunday/Monday off).
There will be a wide variety of vegetable, berry, and vineyard tasks where you will work alongside the farmers, participating in seeding, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, pruning and vine tending. You will help/manage weekly sales at the local farmers market and can expect to be involved with the farm for 40 hours per week (50 hours per week in July and Aug, to match the reality of the busiest part of the season!). As part of your paid work hours, you will be encouraged to participate in several free educational workshops organized by WSU and Kitsap County Extension. Opportunity to work additional time for more pay is available. We are excited to share our farming knowledge with a new generation of farmers! Educational Opportunities: This is primarily a work-based internship with most learning happening in the field. We have found it meaningful to take time during the workday to go over topics that are pertinent to the task at hand. You will get a well-rounded, hands-on experience of small-scale vegetable farming, including exposure to propagation, irrigation, soil preparation, weed management, season extension techniques, harvesting, insect & disease control, marketing, etc. You will also gain an understanding of vineyard management in the Puget Sound region. We offer further learning opportunities in farm business planning, using draft horses, small construction, pruning and wine making for individuals that are self-motivated and willing to commit time above and beyond the internship daily expectations. Interns will participate in off-farm educational workshops 1-2 times per month run cooperatively by Washington State University (WSU) Kitsap County Extension and local farmers. This will help provide a broader perspective on farming options and skills.
Skills Desired: We are looking for two individuals who have a positive attitude, enthusiasm about farming and local food, a desire to learn, a dependable nature, a strong back and good knees (including ability to lift 40 lbs.), are comfortable working independently and with a team, and are willing to work hard outside in all weather for long hours at repetitive tasks. Good people/communication skills are important. You must have your own transportation (in order to get back and forth between the two farms.) You must be 21 yrs or older (so we can share our farm grown wine with you.) Both Full Tilth farmers are raising families while farming, so we'd love if you have some familiarity with kids. At the least, a willingness to be around babies and young children as well as ability to be self-directed while we are child wrangling! Prior farming or gardening experience is preferable but not necessary. Commitment to eventually starting your own farm business is a plus! Please be vaccinated for COVID-19.
Meals: Some produce from the farms will be available for your use all season. We can provide a small plot for you to grow some veggies if you like. We generally bring our own lunches but eat together during work days and love to gather sporadically for an evening meal/potluck. Other than that, meals can be on your own or shared with other interns.
Stipend: Interns will work part time on two farms, totaling 40 hours per week (50 hours in July & Aug). Pay is $800-$1000/month with housing provided and access to some farm produce for cooking. ($500 for optional part-time work hours in March). Opportunities to earn additional income. Some classes and workshops included in addition to daily on-the-job learning and mentoring.
Housing: Interns will have free housing for the season. There is a shared house in walking distance from one of the farms with private bedrooms & shared living space with interns from another Bainbridge Island farm. There is also a single-person trailer at the other farm which has its own kitchen and composting toilet with access to the house for showers and laundry.
