General Farm Description: The mission of Homegrown Farms is to enrich the lives of Genesee Lake School students through year round educational, vocational, and therapeutic opportunities focusing on a connection with the natural world, food production, and the dignity of meaningful work. Homegrown Farms contains 52 acres of rich organic farmland planted with 2 acres of mixed vegetables such as potatoes, cucumbers, onions, tomatoes, and beans, and 50 acres of row crops such as dry beans, sunflowers, buckwheat, and corn. Opportunities to learn about Bee Keeping, Aqua/Hydroponics and all of the special things that make our Farm SPECIAL.

Internship Details:

As a Farm Operations Assistant, you will:

Responsible for the general maintenance of the farm including repair of farm/field equipment, overseeing service functions of the cube truck and van, and assisting with project constructions and all other farm duties as assigned by the Farm Operations Coordinator.
Performs animal chores including feeding, watering, keeping area clean, maintenance of beehives and maintaining inventory of supplies.
Responsible for farm-related maintenance including monthly animal barn clean-up, general landscaping, and the opening/closing of the pond.
Delivers produce to the Genesee Lake School kitchen.
Responsible for the construction and removal of seasonal flower huts, reports needed supplies, picks up needed supplies off-farm and oversees the storage of the huts and hut supplies. Performs all duties of retail staff as needed.
Assists in the production of planning, filling pots, moving plants, watering and pruning of ornamental plants in the greenhouse. Takes calls and messages related to Greenhouse sales.
Makes deliveries for wholesale greenhouse orders and assists with deliveries to the seasonal retail huts.
Assists with the maintenance of field structures. Assists with preparation for yearly planting, weeding, and harvesting with mowing and tilling per the Field Manager and Farm Operations Coordinator.
Maintains inventory of tools, equipment and production materials. Ensures that work site and grounds are kept clean and orderly. Reports safety, repairs and physical plant needs to the Farm Operations Coordinator.
Assists other farm staff (Controlled Environment Agriculturist, Farm Educator, and Vocational Staff) with programmatic and operational duties as needed.
Acts as a role model for students, staff and the community. Conducts self in positive, respectful and collaborative manner demonstrating proactive actions and decision making that foster supportive work relationships and a healthy and safe environment. Communicates effectively verbally and in writing with internal and external customers maintaining professional conduct and confidentiality.
Willingness to stay informed of current trends in services and other related areas; attends conferences, workshops and other training as needed and shares this new information with department.
Complies with and positively reinforces with other staff expectations outlined in: Company Handbook; policies and procedures including emergency/disaster procedures, fire/tornado safety and maintains confidentiality.
