Internship information
General Farm Description: We are a small farmstead goat dairy in beautiful Loudoun County, Virginia- about 60 miles northwest of Washington DC. We milk 45 goats once a day and make 10 varieties of fresh and aged (both pasteurized and raw) cheese, goats milk caramel, and goats milk soaps which we sell at farmers markets, to local restaurants and retail outlets, at our farm store, and through a CSA program. Our goats rotationally graze and browse about 80 acres of our farm, which has been in the family since the 1750's. We operate seasonally, milking and making cheese from March through December and are focused on producing high quality milk and cheese that highlights the flavor of our land. We have a small flock of laying hens and whey fed pastured pork both of which are fed locally grown non GMO grain in addition to pasture. We also offer agritourism experiences in the spring with our baby goats.

Internship Details:

Duties will include milking goats, moving fencing, bottle feeding & snuggling baby goats, helping with cheesemaking, working at farmers markets, feeding pigs and chickens, washing eggs, and other miscellaneous farm work. Our work is varied- on the farm you will be lifting heavy things, getting dirty, and working closely with animals, while in the creamery you will be making cheese, paying close attention to cleanliness, and packaging product for market. You will learn the ins and outs, craziness and fun, of a seasonal farmstead dairy operation- including it’s unique advantages and challenges. We are happy to share our experience and knowledge and are willing to provide details about any part of the operation including financials with our intern. Hours are approximately 7am-4pm 5 days a week plus 7am-10am one day; one scheduled mid week vacation during the summer.

Educational Opportunities: There will be lots of opportunities to learn during daily work on the farm, we are happy to share our experience and knowledge including financials with our intern. We are a small team so our intern learns every part of our operation. We also participate in Chesapeake CRAFT through which you will be able to visit other farms in the area and meet other farmers & interns- with the understanding that at times farm work will take priority over CRAFT tours.

Skills Desired: Experience on a farm, cheesemaking, or working with animals is a plus but not a requirement. We are a small farm- you will be working closely with us, as well as on your own so ability to follow directions and work independently is important. Reliability, positive attitude, good customer service skills, and attention to detail are very important to us.

Meals: Interns cook for themselves. You will have access to milk, cheese & eggs from the farm, vegetables each week from a neighboring farm, and opportunity to trade for other goods at the farmers market. You also have access to 3 raised beds in which to garden if desired.

Stipend: Yes starting at 1000/month, more based on experience

Housing: Yes, 28' RV camper trailer with full kitchen and double bed

Preferred method of Contact: Phone or email
