Internship information
General Farm Description: Goatsbeard Farm is a family owned goat farm and creamery located in Central Missouri, just 30 minutes northwest of Columbia, MO. Rich pasture, young forest, ponds and a winding creek make up our 80 acre farm where our herd of 50 goats go out daily with our rotational grazing system. We have a community of longterm volunteers and crew members that help us run the farm as well as dogs, cats, turkey, chickens, ducks and pigs that all have their role in the farm system. Goatsbeard farm is one of only a few family farms in Missouri which is also a commercial goat dairy producing cheese. All our cheese is made on site with the milk from our herd of goats. Our dairy building contains a milking parlor, a milk storage room, a cheese making room and two cheese aging rooms. We produce fresh, mold-ripened, and aged cheese that we sell to restaurants and our local farmers market.CRAFT Member Farm? No

Internship Details:
Interns will participate in all aspects of the farm, from assisting with kidding, milking the goats, cleaning equipment, moving nets to open up grazing in the field, participating in each step of cheesemaking, and packaging and selling cheese at the farmers market. Our intention with this position is to offer a deep look into what it takes to run a dairy operation, to learn skills of animal husbandry and cheesemaking, and have a joyful yet well earned taste of what it is to live and work on a dairy farm. We work hard and spend a lot of time with the animals, but there is also ample time to enjoy the beauty of the farm and the cheese we produce.
Educational Opportunities: On top of on farm education, we schedule tours and workdays at local farms.
Skills Desired: At least one season completed on another farm is preferred. As much as farm experience we are looking for someone with a strong work ethic, willingness to learn, and excitement to learn the ins and outs of dairy farming. We are out in all types of weather, a positive attitude and a love for the outdoors can go a long way.
Meals: Basic food is provided along with a weekly share of cheese and eggs, and vegetables from the garden. There will be at least one shared meal a week with those living on farm.
Stipend: $300 a month stipend, after 3 months pay is negotiable
Housing: Housing on farm is provided. We have two available rooms in the loft above the dairy. Interns will have full use of the dairy bathroom and kitchen. We are also open to interns who bring R.V.s to place on the farm and live out of for the season.
