Internship information
General Farm Description: We are Georgia's first and only Certified Organic Pastured Poultry Farm. We have just launched a processing facility, which is the first independent poultry processing facility in the state. We believe that pasture-raised meat should be the mainstream source of protein, as it is most nutritious, sustainable, and humane. Our farm sells predominantly direct-to-consumer at various Farmers Markets in Downtown Atlanta. Our farm is owned by Shaun and his wife, Sabrina. They have two kids, a cattle dog, and a Livestock Guardian Dog as loveable as ever, Jed. Our farm also backs up to a Wildlife Management Area, so there is plenty of room to hike and enjoy nature.

Internship Details:

Part of our farm’s goal is to encourage others to join in on the pastured poultry movement. That’s why we want to share everything we know with our apprentice. Everything will be open for learning- books, numbers, records… you name it. We want our apprentice to gain the knowledge and tools to start their own farm. We work hard, but keep pretty healthy hours. Apprentice will work 5 to 6 days a week, no more than 40 hours per week. Occasionally, odd hours are required (super early for moving chicks to pasture or after dark when loading birds for processing). You will also have the opportunity to learn about our sister-farm, NoMad Hens (next door) egg-laying operation.

Apprentice will learn pastured poultry business in segments:
1) Basics of Pastured Poultry Management- Apprentice will learn about brooder design & management, mobile shelter design, feeding & nutrition regimen, record-keeping, managing flock health
2) Organic Certification and Management: Apprentice will learn process of acquiring Organic Certification, record-keeping techniques, rules and regulations
3) Farmers Markets and Direct-to-Consumer Marketing: We pride ourselves on our Direct-to-Consumer marketing. Apprentice will learn about newsletter, website, and social media management.

Educational Opportunities: Most of the learning will be on-farm, hands-on, or in-office training. However, Apprentice will have the opportunity to work/attend Farmers Markets in Atlanta to network. If arriving early, you will have the opportunity to attend the Georgia Organics Conference. We also have a group of close farm friends and we would love to farm hop with you.

Skills Desired: Prior farm experience or education preferred, but not required. We would gladly trade experience for enthusiasm and interest in sustainable farming. We expect our employees and apprentices to be responsible, reliable, and quick. There is always a learning curve, but in farming, there isn't time for slow. We work normal hours because we move quickly and efficiently.

Meals: No meals are provided. Weekly small allotments of farm products (chicken, eggs, seasonal vegetables) and occasionally venison and fish.

Stipend: $200 per week

Housing: Yes. We have a small, but fairly new RV parked by our barn. The RV has working water (shower, sink), septic (toilet), and is hooked up to electricity (Air conditioning included!). The RV has a small refrigerator, stove, and toaster oven. You also have the added fun of our LGD, Jed to play with you, join you on walks, and generally make you happier.

Preferred method of Contact: Email
