General Farm Description: Greenstone Fields is a successful cut flower farm, located in Loudoun County Virginia, 50 miles west of Washington, DC. Our farm is one of five in a 400-acre farming community. We are in our 15th year of production growing more than 90 different annuals, perennials, brambles and woodies. We have a greenhouse and 4 high tunnels. We use regenerative farming practices and take pride in our reputation for high-quality, long-lasting flowers. Customers tell us that our flowers are food for their soul. We sell our flowers primarily at one of the largest farmers markets in the Washington, DC area. We do weddings and events, provide the flower share for 2 CSA programs and sell wholesale to florists and designers. Greenstone Fields is a leader in the growing movement to educate the public about the value of local flowers. Our mission is to grow growers.

Internship Details:

This is a seasonal position that starts in April and ends in mid-November. Crew members will learn all aspects of running a sustainable flower farm, including planting, weeding, harvesting, bouquet making, market prep and customer interaction.

Work weeks consist of five days, including Saturdays. Scheduled, unpaid vacation time is encouraged. We seek crew members who want to stay multiple seasons and who may be interested in our farm succession plan. Part-time work is also available.

Crew members work in teams and are also expected to work independently on tasks and small projects. Crew members are expected to eventually take ownership of some farm processes such as irrigation/fertility, high tunnel, or perennial management. Becoming accountable for selected areas comes with increased compensation.


Educational Opportunities: We learn by doing the work as we have outlined in our Greenstone Fields Operations Manual. You will learn all aspects of running a cut flower farm. There are also opportunities to attend local CRAFT Farm Tours once a month.

Skills Desired: Required Qualifications: a full season of farming experience or experience working in a complex, interdependent team an understanding of the intensity of farm work ability to follow instructions even when you have other ideas about how to do a task mindful attention to detail and big-picture awareness positive, enthusiastic and self-motivated a strong interest in flowers previous experience working directly with customers willing to work in all weather conditions able to lift up to 50 pounds regularly

Stipend: "Starting pay $10 - $13 an hour, depending upon your experience Raises are given based upon your performance, ability to take on responsibility and eventually ownership of tasks and projects.
