Internship information
General Farm Description: Saco River Farms is a family owned multifaceted and well diversified farmstead in Steep Falls, Maine. We grow a wide variety of vegetables, fruit and herbs using deep organic methods while avoiding the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides or GMO’s. Our produce is sold through our farm stand and CSA. Additionally, we are a Maine licensed goat dairy/creamery. Our dairy products include raw milk, yogurt and many cheeses. Other farm products include a selection of meat, poultry and eggs. Sustainable Farming: Our focus is on sustainable farming using “Deep Organic” techniques whenever possible. We believe that the use of chemical insecticides is detrimental to our farms, the environment and most importantly the people who consume our produce. Our vegetables and fruits are produced using only OMRI certified (or equivalent) organic products. In our efforts to offer a product which is truly organic, we use our own quality compost; manure as well as organic fertilizers. No chemical fertilizers are ever sprayed on our plants. Our vegetables and fruits are GMO free. We aim to also be as sustainable and organic as possible in raising our animals, believing that healthy animals improves the quality of the meat, eggs, and dairy products we consume. In raising our animals we also consider value to be important. While are animals are not 100% organic, we aim to come as close as possible, while providing our customers with a healthy, sustainable product at reasonable prices. We offer our products for sale through our on farm market, wholesale, and a CSA. Saco River Farms is also an outreach ministry of Fields of Zion International (FOZI), a Christian led organization working to rebuild sustainable farming and community development. As a FOZI partner farm, we serve as a Interactive Farmstead Demonstration Center. Acting as a community center and focal point, for both agricultural and Christian spiritual learning. Internship programs through Fields of Zion International equip students with basic and advanced farming skills. In addition, interns are offered the opportunity for Christian fellowship, discipleship and learning to shepherd the way God intended. Our partner farmers have committed to living and teaching fundamental core values needed for a healthy Christian life.
