Number of Internship Available: 3
Application Deadline: Rolling- contact us for an application
Minimum Length of Stay: 3 months
Internship Details:
“Apprentices will take full part in the day-to-day operation of a self-sustained, growing organic farm business. Tasks include crop planning, seeding, weeding, greenhouse work, irrigation, harvesting, washing, marketing and animal husbandry. Work crews consist of combinations of farmers, apprentices, trained volunteers and occasionally hourly workers. Work hours are generally 7am-5pm, Monday through Friday and 7am-lunch on Saturday. We can usually accommodate requests for time off with enough notice. “
Educational Opportunities: "We work alongside apprentices most of the day, offering guidance, demonstration and discussion. We were both introduced to farming through apprenticeships and value this education model. Apprentices will be given opportunities for solo projects and have access to the farm library and work opportunities on other local farms. We are 20 minutes from MOFGA headquarters and allow time off to attend their training sessions. In addition to vegetable farming, apprentices with have exposure to the following: cut flowers, carpentry, firewood, animal processing, food preservation, equipment maintenance and bookkeeping. "
Skills Desired: "We are looking for people interested in exploring a full time career in farming. Successful applicants will have good people skills, attention to detail, a sense of humor and a strong commitment to food and sustainable agriculture. As we are now farming with young children, we ask apprentices to be patient, empathetic and self sufficient. Must be comfortable with outdoor manual labor in inclement weather, have a valid driver's license and the ability to safely lift 50 pounds. Overall, we are looking for people who appreciate the value of a good day of hard work in the great outdoors. "
Meals: "The farm will provide veggies and meat, basic grocery staples and the opportunity to trade at farmers' markets. We take turns cooking crew lunches during the week. Breakfast and dinner are typically on your own, but we do enjoy occasional crew paellas and campfire cookouts. Enjoying the delicious food grown on the farm and by our friends is one of our top priorities, and we love to share our passion for food with the crew. "
Stipend: "Payment starts at $400/month in the spring and includes housing, farm veggies and meat and basic grocery staples. Payment will increase on a monthly basis based on experience and reflects the increase in farm income as the season progresses, up to $1200 a month. There is opportunity for a bonus in November, based on merit and overall success of the farm season. "
Housing: "Apprentices are housed onsite in a 12 x 16 timber frame insulated cabin or 12 x 12 uninsulated pole house. The site has limited solar electricity and no running water, but a pump is available 100 ft away. Apprentices will have access to a composting toilet and each dwelling is outfitted with a propane cookstove and basic kitchen supplies. Showers are available at the main farmhouse. Laundry facilities available in Hampden, less than 10 miles away. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate pets. No tobacco or illegal drugs. "
