General Farm Description: Plew Farm is diversified grass based operation in Mount Holly, Vt. We raise red broilers, eggs, turkeys, pigs, beef, maple syrup and hay. We sell nearly 100% of our products in our farm stand located on our farm. We process our own chickens and turkeys for sale at the farm. We cut hay on area farms to support our beef operation as well as for sale. We have 14 cow/calf pairs from which we raise our beef. We also have a 12 acre sugar bush with 1600 taps from which we make syrup in spring of each year. Chickens are raised in chicken tractors, turkeys in poultry netting.CRAFT Member Farm? No

Internship Details:
An Intern on Plew Farm will be involved in every aspect of running a busy diversified farm during the summer months. Moving chicken tractors, moving laying hens and rotating cattle to new pastures pretty much start each day, but after that it can be anything. We process chickens once morning per week. Much time is spent in the hay fields. Cattle may be moved to another farm and rotated there. In between fences need clearing and fixing. The farm stand is open 7 day a week during the summer and is always busy so you would be working and interacting with customers and partner producers. Operating/maintaining /repairing farm equipment from weedeaters to tractors to forage equipment. Some forestry management depending on the year.
Educational Opportunities: Animal husbandry- chickens, turkeys, pigs, beef cattle. Directing marketing to consumers via word of mouth, social media and advertising. Grass based farming- grazing management, soil testing, no-till seeding, hay making, record keeping. Equipment operation and maintenance. Farm financials. Maple value add production.
Skills Desired: Valid driver's license. Mechanical ability. Good hard working attitude- days can be long.
Meals: Breakfast meal in the house, everything else on your own. $50 per week farmstand credit
Stipend: Yes- $300 per week
Housing: Yes. Small trailer with composting toilet. Shower/laundry in the farm house. High speed internet, but little or no cell service in our area
