Internship information
General Farm Description: At Red Gate Ranch we produce high quality vegetables and pasture raised meats for our community on 110 acres in Tehama County. We are located just a few miles out from Interstate 5 in Red Bluff, California which is thirty minutes south of Redding and about an hour north-west of Chico. We use regenerative farming practices and the low till method of gardening to build soil in our market garden and we manage our pastures in the most efficient way for building ecology and biology. Our heritage pigs and lowline Angus cattle are always out enjoying our fresh pastures and sunshine. Our pigs are rotated to fresh ground and are fed an organic/non-GMO feed fermented with organic apple cider vinegar and organic kelp meal. We are currently producing vegetables and meats for our seasonal farm stand, two local farmers markets, and a growing weekly vegetable CSA! We are looking for Seasonal and Permanent Field Farmers to join our team. Seasonal positions are avaialble during the busiest months of our season roughly from April-October. There is potential for year-round, permanent employment for the right, motivated individual. No experience is necessary for seasonal positions and you can look forward to a lot of hands-on training on our low-till practices in the fields of our market garden. Permanent positions would require at least one season of experience in agricultural or outdoor labor intensive roles. Some field farmers may also work with Audrey or Heather at our local farmers markets or at our onsite Farm stand. These roles will teach you a lot about running a market and the importance of quality customer service. Our positions are for legal employment which will be paid at the hourly starting rate of $15.00. Permanent positions may be paid based on your level of experience.

Seasonal Field Farmers will participate in all areas of production in our market garden. This will include everything from greenhouse work to bed turns, broad forking, amending, seeding, transplanting, cultivating/weeding, harvesting and storing produce, and all of the necessary record keeping. Seasonal Field farmers will also assist with some watering responsibilities and maintenance of our native hedgerows. One or two farmers will also assist with all aspects of farmers market set up and operation on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Seasonal field farmer positions are available with 3, 4, or 5 day per week schedules. Daily start times vary 6 or 7am in peak summer to 9am in winter. Permanent Field Farmer positions would include a full, 4-5 day per week schedule for the majority of the season, and would include a certain amount of planning involvement with record keeping.

Educational Opportunities: Working with us in our market garden will prove to be a constant educational opportunity. We will openly share all of our knowledge with you and will make ourselves available for questions you may have about the administrative and business side of farming at our weekly crew meetings. If you wish to dive really deep into the world of farming beyond our daily field work and weekly meetings, we will share with you our own library of educational books and online courses, and we can also arrange for you to participate in pasture and livestock work. For dedicated field farmers who join us for more than one season, we may also offer a variety of educational opportunities outside of our farm as well.

Skills Desired: Field farmers must be hard working individuals that will be reliable, dedicated, and will bring a positive attitude to each and every shift. This role will require your ability to focus on a single task for extended periods of time. You must have the ability to follow instructions and retain training information. You must be able to work independently or in a group while remaining focused and meeting or exceeding quality expectations. You must have high manual dexterity and must be able to work in an outdoor environment, including tolerating heat, working in the rain, and working with prickly plants. You must be physically able to repeatedly lift and carry items weighing up to 50 lbs and you absolutely must be able to stand, sit, bend, kneel, stretch, and squat for long periods of time.

Meals: Meals are not provided or shared. Vegetables will be given in abundance, and you will also have access to some of our pasture raised pork and beef. (Farmer Kraig tends to be very generous with the bounty from his pastures.)

Stipend: Seasonal Field Farmers are paid $15 per hour depending on experience. You will also receive plenty of vegetables each week!

Housing: Housing is not currently being provided.
