Internship information
General Farm Description: ABOUT US: Roots Farm is located in beautiful Poulsbo WA, just a short ferry ride away from Seattle and just a few miles from the Hood Canal Bridge which accesses the Olympic Peninsula. We are a diversified fruit and vegetable farm that utilizes a no-till growing method of a heavy mulch of woodchips on over 2 acres to reduce our dependence on irrigation and fertilizers, it also greatly reduces weed pressure. Trying to be as environmentally conscience as possible we try and recycle industry by products as much as possible in the form of arborist chips for mulch, cardboard and coffee sacks as weed block and coffee grounds for compost. The basis of the way we grow is the mycelial plant relationship, fields are colonized by native fungi, and we also cultivate mushrooms on logs. We also integrate our farm animals into fenced fields and rotated pasture paddocks as much as possible for weed and pest control as well as fertilization. All animals are in movable pens and have access to fresh rotated pastures. This cycle creates healthier more resilient animals and pastures! On our farm you will learn about plant propagation, no till growing methods, harvesting, organic fertilization practices, pest and disease management, integrative pastured animal husbandry ( pigs, ducks, geese ,goats and sheep), season extension, orchard management/pruning, alternative composting methods, soil blocking and much more! We also are participating in an educational program through WSU that will feature classes on many topics at different local farms throughout the season. https://extension.wsu.edu/regionalsmallfarms/kitsap-farm-mentor-program/
