Internship information
General Farm Description: Round River Farm is a 33 acre walnut orchard (certified organic since 2006), and our home, in Witter Springs, California (near Upper Lake). As a husband-wife team, we have cared for the farm ourselves, mostly, with occasional hired help for the big jobs. We are in the process of expanding and diversifying the farm, and as a step in our farm growth, we want to include aspiring farmers who desire to learn organic farm management on a small enterprise scale.

Number of Internship Available: 2

Minimum Length of Stay: 13 weeks

Internship Details:

The internship will be a combination of hard work and the opportunity to learn many facets of farm management and agroecosystem function. Work activities will include moving portable sprinkler pipe, repairing the drip irrigation system, hoeing weeds, tying & training young trees, pest monitoring, mowing & weed whacking, and other farm chores as necessary. New activities this year include market garden experimentation (peppers, potatoes, carrots, etc…).

Educational Opportunities: Between the two of us we have degrees in biology, soil science, agronomy, and plant pest management as well as decades of experience in farming and farm management. Some of the many topics we want to explore with interns include soil microbiology, carbon sequestration, irrigation efficiency, establishment of young trees, wildlife on the farm, organic pest management, and organic fertility. And we want to encourage new farmers in the nitty gritty of management, including regulatory compliance, food safety, organic certification, basic bookkeeping, workers’ comp, personnel management, ag labor law, and finance.

Skills Desired: We are prioritizing applicants with a desire to learn about organic farming and farm management. Interns must be willing to perform hard work in challenging conditions of heat, dust, and allergens. No previous farming experience is necessary, but it would be helpful. Construction, mechanical, gardening, or cooking skills are all a plus. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.

Meals: Yes

Stipend: The internship will be paid at minimum wage with room and board provided as part of the wages, all arrangements conforming to California labor law. Expected work hours will be approximately 25 hours per week for 13 weeks beginning May 31, 2022 and ending Sept 2, 2022
