Internship information
General Farm Description: Seeds Farm is a 50-acre organic farm in Northfield, Minnesota which grows 18 acres of certified organic and GAP vegetables for wholesale accounts, including food coops, restaurants, distributors, cafeterias, public schools, and food shelves. We are two miles south from downtown Northfield, a town of 20,000 people, and 45 minutes south of the Twin Cities. Seeds Farm is woman owned and managed by Becca Carlson and has been in operation since 2010. We strive for the triple bottom line of sustainability; social, environmental, and financial. Our 18 acres of vegetables include 1/3 acre of high tunnels for season extension. We grow in bare soil as well as raised plastic beds (experimenting with mulched straw in-between). We host monthly Dinner at the Farms, open for the public to come out to the farm and enjoy a locally made meal from our veggies, community, and music. We love farming and try hard to cultivate a fun and meaningful workplaceCRAFT Member Farm? No

Internship Details:
Seeds Farm is an exciting place to work, with opportunities for different levels of experience. Our team will be 8 people this season, which is small enough that folks will get plenty of opportunity to see all aspects of the operation, from seeding in the greenhouse, planting, cultivating, irrigating, harvesting, washing, packing, and tasks in between. Seeds Farm is hiring multiple positions:
(1 position) Farm Crew/ Tractor Operator-$15-17/hr, DOE. **Past Tractor and implement experience is required for this position.
Seeds Farm has a slew of tractors and implements we use on our farm from cultivating, harvesting, bed prep, cover cropping, and mulching and we are looking for another experienced tractor operator to help us with these tasks, as well as be a part of the general farm crew. In an interview we will go over certain tasks and equipment. Knowledge on tractor care is mandatory, tractor mechanics is optional (but a plus!)
(1 position) Packshed Manager $14-16/hr DOE
The packshed manager is in charge of the operations in the packshed. PM will receive product from the field and ensure that it is washed properly and safely, packed, labeled, and sent out in a timely manner. Attention to detail and efficiency is a must for this position, as well as leadership for other folks on the packshed team. The PM will be in the packshed 1-3 days a week, depending on the harvest and time of year, and will work with the general crew the rest of the week. PM will work closely with the harvest manager and farm manager to ensure the right amount of the right quality of produce gets out to the right customer.
(3 positions) General Farm Crew $12-15/hr DOE
These three positions are span the gamete of tasks on a diverse vegetable farm, which keeps work exciting! Very few days are similar. On a wholesale vegetable farm, the Farm Crew will spend their days caring for vegetables from all stages from seed to delivery. We all work hard on this farm, there will be days where we harvest peppers all day. But there are also days that are more diverse where we may trellis tomatoes for a few hours, plant seeds in the greenhouse for a few hours, and cultivate a field of squash after lunch.
Seeds Farm works an 8-9 hour day with a 45 min unpaid lunch, though there are *few* times we expect the crew to work a few extra hours if the weather requires us to. We will do our best to communicate this ahead of time, but it may come up last minute (for example getting the onions planted before the forecasted rain. We expect our crew to work in all weather conditions, rain or shine, hot or cold. Farmers are encouraged to take veggies home to enjoy!
Educational Opportunities: At Seeds Farm, you can learn about large, wholesale production farming
Skills Desired: Previous experience on other farms is required for the Crew Leader, though not necessary for the general farm workers. For the crew leader, leadership skills are preferred.
