General Farm Description: Spreading Oaks Farm is a small family-owned farm located 20 minutes west of Atlanta in Paulding County. Internship Details:
The apprentice will work alongside us and other team members during the week and assist as needed on the weekend. A typical week will consist of 5 -6 days of work. During the summer, we will start earlier, take longer lunch breaks to avoid the heat of the day, and work later into the afternoon. The intern will be designated 1 free weekend per month.
Educational Opportunities: The apprentice will work closely with us. Experience includes starting seeds in cell packs, direct seeding into soil, transplanting plants into the soil, proper maintenance of the plants during growing season, determining when and how to harvest for best flavor, how to plan successional plantings to extend growing season, how to determine which crops are best at your market, how to properly harvest and pack for markets, how to set up and sell produce at markets.
Skills Desired: We require a minimum of experience of one season working on an organic, production farm. Applicant should have a willingness to learn, the ability to work well with others, good physical health, not allergic to bee/wasps, able to work outside in all conditions, able to listen and follow directions. Applicant must be able to stoop, bend over, kneel, and crawl on knees at times to accomplish tasks such as weeding, harvesting, planting and preparing beds for plants. Applicant must be able to carry 5 gallon buckets with produce in them, or harvest totes full of produce, or flats and crates of produce, typically weighing 20 to 40 lbs.
Meals: No meals are provided, but access to seasonal produce is available from the farm, and groceries and eateries are within walking distance of the farm.
Stipend: The apprentice will receive a weekly stipend of $150.
Housing: Yes. There is a 26' self contained travel trailer with electricity and hot/cold running water. Air conditioning unit is installed. However, if the apprentice chooses to stop working on the farm, they are expected to immediately vacate the housing and property.
