General Farm Description: Come get your hands dirty, feet moving, and your body tired, but most of all come learn about good food and how to grow it! Our farmstead offers a little bit of everything. We raise 100% grass fed Belted Galloway Beef Cows and sheep, laying hens, broiler chickens, heritage breed Tamworth pigs and a milking cow on pasture, and an acre of organic vegetables. We believe in treating our animals with respect and helping them live the way they were meant to live. We also believe in rebuilding the soil and conserving the earth's resources so we feed Certified organic grains from a local family farm and consider our impact on the earth with our decisions. We also host families for overnight stays on the farm and offer 5 weeks of workshops to local children.CRAFT Member Farm? Yes

In addition to helping with daily farm chores (feeding and moving animals, planting, weeding in the garden), you will also have the opportunity to work on the area of the farmstead that interests you most. Some examples from past apprentices: help with the agri-tourism enterprise now in its 14th year, construction of outbuildings and tent platforms, Pizza and Bread baker (we have a wood-fired outdoor pizza oven that we fire up every Saturday), market gardener, sous-chef in the farm kitchen, and designing signage.
We know that anyone can benefit from spending time on a working farm. We are an energetic couple with two teenagers and parents who live close by. During your stay you will become a member of our family and small community as well as a farm apprentice. We work hard, eat delicious food, and enjoy each other’s company. The work week: 6 days, approximately 50 hours total, rain or shine. *There is a potential to earn income on days off helping with farm-related work and extra projects.
Educational Opportunities: At Stony Creek Farm, education is mainly hands-on, learning-by-doing. We have a daily morning meeting where we discuss questions and many lunches turn into spur-of-the-moment lessons on everything from marketing plans to food philosophy. We lend books from our sustainable agriculture collection. You can also enjoy our area's natural attractions on days off including kayaking, hiking, biking, climbing, and swimming.
Skills Desired: No farming experience required - but if you’ve got it..great! We will help you develop your skills and take them to the next level. We are looking for apprentices who are self-directed and enjoy the challenges that arise throughout the farm season. We also want you to help us improve the way we do things on the farm by sharing your perspective with us and by taking responsibility for the parts of our operation that interest you. Sense of humor, independence, initiative, a good attitude, hard worker and a large dose of common sense are also a must.
