Internship Details:
Our internships/ jobs are full immersion, live on site experiences. The internship we are currently hiring for is on our 1700 acre cattle ranch in the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado. This is a gorgeous location surrounded by mountains in an incredibly quiet, remote location. Interns work five days per week from sunrise until the days work is done with the ranch manager caring for our beef herd of approximately 150 head practicing adaptive stockmanship using rotational grazing and low stress animal handling techniques. Our San Luis Valley herd consists of cow calf pairs and stockers that get moved to Boulder for grass finishing. There will be work moving the animals primarily on horseback, building fencing, moving portable electric fencing, ensuring adequate access to clean water and minerals, irrigating and improving irrigation infrastructure, ensuring animal health, monitoring forage health and animal condition, tagging, castrating bulls, assisting with calving, etc.
Educational Opportunities: Interns will be exposed to all aspects of our holistically managed cattle operation and will have opportunities to learn about regenerative management practices in addition to learning about how to set up a regenerative ranch operation.
Skills Desired: We are looking for applicants who already have basic horsemanship skills, have been around livestock and are looking to learn about regenerative ranching methods and low stress animal handling. We are looking for hard working interns/ employees who are self-motivated team players who demonstrate a positive attitude toward work regardless of the weather, are serious about doing rewarding work and understand and seek out serious play.
Meals: No. Shared meals with the ranch manager are common.
Stipend: Compensation varies depending upon the level of experience, commitment and value of any skills that the applicant adds to the operation. The stipend for a well qualified intern signing on for a full season commitment would be $700/two week period along with Workman’s Comp and housing. We would consider higher pay for applicants with more experience and dedication to the trade and pay would be lower for short-term or work/trade, part-time commitments.
Housing: Yes, currently we are offering a room with a shared bath and kitchen in our ranch manager’s house. In Spring 2024 we will have a small, private historic cabin available.
