General Farm Description: We are a 5 acre, non-certified organic homestead with animals, ¼ acre market garden, greenhouse, plus several permaculture spaces. We offer agritourism in the form of farm tours, baby goat cuddles and goat yoga. We practice no till, utilize organic & biodynamic growing practices. We do not use GMO's, or hybrid seeds, but focus on heirloom and open-pollinated varieties. Our sales are via our farm stand and online via an online farmers market, we do not attend a farmers market. Our animals include dairy goats, sheep, laying hens, meat birds and turkeys. We also have 3 dogs (2 LGDs and one chihuahua) and 3 cats. Internship Details:
The Smithshyre is looking for 2 interns, preferably 2 who can live together in our camper. Ideal candidates would be folks who are self motivated, good communicators, independent and strong with good knees and backs capable of lifting 50 pounds. You will be working with plants and animals. Experience growing produce is preferred, but not necessary. We hold a daily meeting in the AM to plan our day and a debrief in the PM. Please be prepared to offer references from past employers.
Educational Opportunities: Depends on what you are looking for. We know several other farmers who do things differently than we do, so that is an option.
Skills Desired: We do have a few building projects planned for this year, finishing our packing / washing shed and installing a walk cooler. Social media and small engine maintenance skills are a bonus. Animal husbandry experience also greatly appreciated.
Meals: Access to the gardens for your meals, plus weekly family dinner (no food preservation).
Stipend: We are looking for a 4-5 day a week commitment with financial compensation negotiable. Also possibility of part-time work off farm once a week.
Housing: Our offerings include a camper with separate kitchen space that includes a full sized refrigerator. Staples and dishes will also be included. There is access to house shower and washer and dryer on site, internet, family spotify plan and resource library.
