Internship Details:
“WHF Apprentices help with all aspects of animal husbandry as well as tending a 1/10 acre vegetable garden, marketing, retail, and wholesale sales interactions. This will include daily chores, pasture management and rotation, breeding, animal health care, and slaughter, tractor operation and wholesale deliveries. As on any farm, significant time will be spent on problem-solving, repairing, constructing, weeding and cleaning. We will be canning and freezing fruit and vegetables for winter consumption. The apprentices will also help with CSA share packing and farm store operations, social media account contributions as well as educational tours and programs on the farm. We will make every effort to educate and include our apprentices in every task and will tailor the educational opportunities to the desires of the apprentices. Some aspects of the work are efficiency and task-oriented. We work hard to make this a good place to live and work. “
Educational Opportunities: "Our apprenticeship is a great opportunity for folks to learn what is involved in including livestock into farming ventures. We involve the apprentice on every level of the operation as well as off-site educational opportunities (ie: tours, workshops, classes). We are also a part of the Young Farmer's Network and attend their diverse farm tours and pot-luck dinners and host one each year. This is a hands-on, on the job way to learn as you go through the season. "
Skills Desired: "Our ideal candidate will be an avid learner, a considerate and respectful housemate, self-motivated, able to work independently and contribute thoughtfully in a team. The candidate will be able to work long hours with a good attitude, able to lift 50 lbs, willing to get dirty, passionate about food, and has desires to continue farming in the future. Vegetable production experience, social media management, marketing, carpentry, construction or mechanical experience are desired, but not necessary. We have a "farm family" meal once a week to break bread together and stay connected as a community. All other meals are cooked separately in the apprentice village. Each year the apprentices decide how cooking/sharing groceries works best for them. A personal vehicle is a must, as there is no immediate access to public transportation nor are we on a good cycling road. The farm has a Mon.-Fri. work week with rotating weekend duty shared amongst farm staff. A site visit prior to acceptance is greatly preferred. Non-tobacco users are preferred. We are looking for our apprentices to start May 1st and work until mid-November. Longer term agreements are possible upon further discussion, as we always keep some staff through the winter."
Meals: "Apprentices share small but full-kitchen with gas stove and full fridge to prepare meals with farm fresh ingredients. Meat, eggs, and vegetables from farm available for apprentices. We highly encourage organic, seasonal eating. Once a week we all share a dinner together in the farm house. Each year the apprentices decide amongst themselves how they would like to work out meals and groceries, often it's kept separate. "
Stipend: " -Private on-farm sleeping space in campers/tiny home - Communal kitchen and living space shared with other apprentices - Wi-fi available in apprentice village - 2 Shared showers (one outdoor) & composting toilet & laundry (line drying only) - vegetables, meat, & eggs from the farm - occasional off-site educational opportunities; i.e. workshops, farm visits, etc. - 30 mins from beaches, Newport, and Providence - $750/mo stipend (responsible for off-farm food, and propane)"
Housing: "Newly built tiny home on a trailer bed with full-kitchen, communal living room and a private bedroom for one apprentice. Separate freshly revamped camper for second apprentice's bedroom with running water, queen sized bed and plenty of storage space. 3rd separate bedroom/camper available which includes clean and modern living space. Composting toilets, outdoor-shower with hot water, electricity, & wi-fi all available at apprentice "village". Washer available in apprentice village with a line-drying option. "
