General Farm Description: York Farm is a century-old farm located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, just outside of Mount Airy, NC. Since 2016, we’ve been revitalizing ten acres of land to provide our area with organically grown produce. We grow around forty different types of vegetables throughout the year, distributing through a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, Cobblestone Farmers’ Market, an online and on-farm store, and local restaurants. Internship Details:
We’re seeking two full time crew members for the 2021 season. The positions are for the 2021-2022 season running from May to May, with the potential to stay on. We’re looking for crew members who are willing and able to work a very physical job that takes place in all weather conditions. The job requires you to be comfortable with living and working on the farm for the season. Aside from farm work, crew members should be comfortable working individually and on a team, and should have good customer service skills. Employees will be required to comply with COVID protocol.
Educational Opportunities: All aspects of vegetable production including: Greenhouse work - starting seeds, potting up, daily watering Field Work - tillage, transplanting, direct seeding, irrigation, cultivation, IPM Harvest and Post-Harvest Processing - maintenance of sanitation and cleanliness Deliveries and Farmers’ Markets
Skills Desired: Qualifications: Experience working on a vegetable farm or related experience Ability to work as a team and independently Ability to maintain sanitation and organization Ability to lift and move 50 lb. repeatedly Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions Good customer service skills Ability to maintain a positive attitude Ability to pass a drug test if required Valid driver’s license Preferred: 1-2 full seasons working for a sustainable vegetable farm Familiarity with equipment common on vegetable farms General handiness - some familiarity with plumbing, carpentry, equipment maintenance, etc. Ability to interface with the public both on the farm and at market Self-motivated and proactive
Meals: Unlimited farm produce and eggs
Stipend: $10,000 per year paid weekly
Housing: Our shared housing has two private bedrooms, a full kitchen, full bath, and plenty of communal space, with a washer/dryer accessible in the barn the next building over. We can accommodate two crew members at this time. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate partners, children, or pets.
