Internship information
General Farm Description: Hello!! We are an organic vegetable farm located on 7 acres of 350 acres of historic property in Charles Town, WV. We lease our land from (Claymont.org) Retreat Center. We are about 1-2 hours from Baltimore and D.C. and only 15 minutes from historical Harper's Ferry. We are currently running a medium sized production farm, serving three farmers markets on weekends. We are looking for awesome people to come and help out! There are opportunities for working at the farm, the farmers market and kitchen. Weekly activities may include weeding, harvesting, cleaning, seeding, pruning, mowing, moving dirt, bed preparation, building and repair, transplanting, weed whacking, watering, value-added products, online store/social media, farmer's market work; also meal preparation, set up and cleaning of living spaces, and tending to the permaculture garden. There are many opportunities in the surrounding area as well. We have lots of friends on other farms and properties practicing herbalism, alternative building, permaculture, social events, ETC!! Internship Details:
Interns will be expected to preform all tasks on the farm. Learning our techniques and tools for prepping the land, to seeding/ transplanting, monitoring and caring for plant needs, harvesting packaging, all the way up to fulfilling orders and farmer’s market duties… Full time hours expected: 5 days a week, 45 hours minimum.
Educational Opportunities: Other than the on-site learning opportunities and resources, we have several connections with other permaculture, herbal, vegetable and livestock farms.
Skills Desired: We would like some familiarity of farming/ gardening. This experience could be through your own research reading and gardening, or related past work experience. Experience in food preparation and maintenance are valued but not required. People with all skills, talents and backgrounds are welcome. We are most interested in an enthusiastic sharing of yourself. We do not want anyone who would be shocked to learn that we start early, go until finished, and work appropriately on hot, cold, and rainy days!
Meals: Staples provided, such as, rice, quinoa, beans, oats, variety of dried goods, oils, vinegars, seasonings, unlimited vegetables from the farm and goodies from the farmer's markets. Along with weekly shared meals at the farm.
Stipend: $300 a week
Housing: Yes! Sleeping arrangements are provided. You may be provided a private space if required, or to bunk with someone of the same sex, or as a couple. Most other spaces such as kitchen and bathrooms are shared. There is also space for your personal vans/trailers/campers... (Because of shared space, a pre-arrival quarantine and negative covid test is required!)
