Educational Opportunities:

Skills Desired: "The program is for individuals who know they want to pursue a career in agriculture and are looking to gain hands-on knowledge and more advanced skills. Farming experience is not required for this position but is encouraged. Applicants must demonstrate awareness regarding the challenges of working agriculture, as well as demonstrate some deep thinking about personal motivation for pursuing a career in agriculture and their goals. Apprentices must be over age 18, be eligible to work in the United States, have a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent, and have a valid U.S. Driver's License."

Meals: Farmers are not required to provide meals for apprentices.

Stipend: "This is a formal apprenticeship program. Apprentices will be paid for 3,000 hours of on-the-job training. Starting pay is $11 an hour and it will increase by $0.50 every six months. Some farms will have apprentices work overtime hours, which are paid at time and a half. The work season typically spans from March to November, plus or minus a month or two. Apprentices should not expect to be employed by the farm all 12 months of the year, but they will be eligible for unemployment. Apprentices are not responsible for paying for coursework. All coursework fees are covered. "

Housing: Few of our participating farms offer housing. Most apprentices will need to be prepared to find their own housing.
