Internship information
General Farm Description: "Our certified organic farm supplies local families with weekly veggie boxes through our small CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program of 75-100 families. We have a vibrant and growing community of CSA members, most of whom visit the farm every week to pick up their vegetables, forage for extra "u-pick" items, and connect with the farm and farmers. We also sell produce at three farmers markets (one is seasonal and two year-round), as well as to Bay Area chefs and caterers. Our flock of free-ranging laying hens provide ourselves and locals with fresh eggs. We are working towards a "full-diet" farm--growing dry beans, wheat, and barley in addition to vegetables and animal products. Our operation is located on our 4-generation family farm, which also includes sustainably managed vineyard and pasture land. The farm is located in the Russian River Valley, with the river on one side and oak hills on the other -- there are plenty of opportunities to hike, bike, canoe, and swim in the middle of the beautiful countryside. The closest towns are Forestville, Healdsburg, Windsor, for urban amenities such as coffee shops, movie theaters, libraries, grocery stores, and rental housing. "

Internship Details:

“Our farm is seeking a seasonal full-time field team member to work with us 5 days per week during 2017 (March-November), and hopefully beyond. This is a seasonal, full-time position, with room to grow. (The position is intended to be 5 days per week, however we are open to hearing from you if you are looking for part-time work; sometimes it is available, especially if you are local to our area.) You will participate in all phases of the farm, including seed starting, greenhouse management and transplanting, weeding and pest management, harvesting and marketing of produce. We are looking for dedicated, hardworking, and outgoing individuals who will be an integral part of our farm team, not only to work the fields but also to interact with customers at the farmers' market and farm members at CSA pick-up. The farmer will participate in crop planning and production, twice-a-week harvest days, sell at a weekly farmers' market, and work together with other farmers and/or volunteers.</br></br>
TO APPLY: Please email us a cover letter and resume or list of experiences, plus at least two references. Please include: relevant past work experience; your short-term and long-term goals; and any other skills that you have that might be useful on the farm.</br></br>
If we feel we may be a good match, we will contact you to set up a phone or Skype interview and/or a farm visit. Applicants who are able to visit the farm receive priority, as we think it is important to meet in person as well as show you the farm.”

Educational Opportunities: "Even if you are an experienced farmer, we expect that you will continue to learn and grow while a part of our team. The field team position is intended for someone with more farm experience (though we may also have intern positions that are more of an entry-level position for someone with some--but not necessarily a lot of--experience.)</br></br> <br /><br /> You'll have opportunities to learn about:</br> -Organic growing techniques for a wide variety of vegetables from seed to harvest;</br> -Pest control strategies;</br> -Seed starting from asparagus to onions to tomatoes;</br> -Efficient harvesting techniques;</br> -Tips and tricks for farmers' market sales;</br> -CSA management strategies.</br></br> <br /><br /> While work will mostly be in the vegetable fields, there will be opportunities within and outside of work time to experience the livestock and learn about animal husbandry topics, such as:</br> -Livestock husbandry techniques for chickens and goats;</br>"

Skills Desired: "We are looking for a farmer with a strong commitment to sustainable, community-based agriculture. We appreciate a willingness to work hard and the ability to also have fun while doing it. Some prior experience with CSA farms is a big plus. Being handy with basic farm repairs (irrigation, fences, gates, barns) or carpentry are pluses. Good communication skills are essential in our fluid farming landscape that changes day-to-day. We also value an openness to try new things, a focused and dedicated work ethic with attention to detail, an easygoing attitude, the flexibility to adjust to a fluid work environment, and--of course--an enthusiasm for plant and animal life! <br /><br /> Specifically, we're looking for experience in at least some of the following areas:</br> -Organic growing techniques for a wide variety of vegetables from seed to harvest;</br> -Seed starting, propagation and greenhouse management;</br> -Harvesting and marketing a wide variety produce;</br> -Farmers' market sales;</br> -Management of a CSA program;</br> -Managing field crews and/or volunteers;</br> -Tending livestock, such as chickens and goats; -What the rhythm of life is like on a small, diversified farm!</br></br>"

Meals: "Farmers will be responsible for their own meals. As part of your compensation, you'll be provided with plenty of organic veggies. Eggs may sometimes be available at discount prices. Occasionally, we like to get together for dinner or lunch, because we think it's important to enjoy some non-work time together, and not all learning happens in the field. "

Stipend: "This is a seasonal, full-time position, paid an hourly wage plus plenty of fresh produce. Total hours per week average approximately 40-45 hours/week during peak season (May-October.) Potential winter work hours, depending on weather and markets. This position can have room to grow and we hope to find someone interested in a longer-term relationship."

Housing: "The is currently no housing available on the farm. We are always happy to help find housing by reaching out to friends, CSA members, etc. Please let us know if you are moving from another region and will be looking for housing."
