“This internship is a great opportunity for a person who would like to own their own farm and would like to build many different skills related to organic fruit and vegetable production. This position requires a person who is an independent worker and thinker- we are a small farm, and there are many different opportunities here to grow your knowledge of diversified organic farming, as well as opportunities for advancement and full time employment as our farm business grows. Interns will learn all aspects of organic vegetable and fruit production. Additional opportunities to learn about medicinal plants and aspects of preparing and drying herbs and making value added products (jams and sauce) are also components of the internship. Apprentices weekly hours are Tuesday-Saturday, with Sundays and Mondays off. There are many other young farmers and interns here in the area and events at the farmers grange too. The internship time period can be flexible, but we prefer someone who can stay through the season. “
Educational Opportunities: "In addition to the ongoing educational activities at the farm and training in organic vegetable and fruit production, harvesting, packing, seeding, transplanting, recordkeeping and food safety, we have connections with 2 local farmer training programs and interns will have the opportunity to attend workshops and classes to gain additional skills during the season. "
Skills Desired: "We would prefer someone who has had at least 1 season of experience working on a farm. However we will consider someone who is highly motivated. Skills desired are ability to work independently, organized and attention to detail are very important. Sense of humor much appreciated. We prefer someone who has lived in a rural area before, as this is indeed a rural area with the nearest large city approximately 50 miles away."
Meals: "We offer produce from our farm and eggs. We share meals on harvest evenings with everyone rotating cooking duties each week. We eat meat occasionally, but are respectful of any diet accommodations. "
Stipend: "Apprentices will receive a $150 weekly stipend ( approx $600/month), housing and partial board for the duration of the internship. There is a possibility for full time employment for the person with the right combination of skills and motivation after a 2 month trial period."
Housing: "The accommodations are a small quaint cabin separate from our house that will accommodate 1-2 people. The cabin is among some fruit trees and small garden area being developed and is private but semi-close to the main house. There is an outdoor solar shower, full kitchen and composting toilet, outdoor clay oven. There is public transportation within 15 minutes of the farm. We recommend interns have their own transportation- either bicycle or car. Alternatively, there is a treehouse platform for camping in a more secluded area of the property for 1 person."
