Internship informationGeneral Farm Description: "Mill Village Farms is a non-profit organization started in 2012. Our mission is to teach youth (age 14-18) job skills, life skills, sustainable agriculture and entrepreneurship by working on our farm. The produce that the youth grow right in their community is then sold back to the community via the Mill Village Mobile Market and our new ""brick & mortar"" market in the Village of West Greenville. We have approximately 1.5 acres under production in addition to hydroponic and aquaponic systems as well. MVF hires several interns over the summer to work with the youth and at our market, but this year is the first year that we are offering a full-time farm apprenticeship. “The Farm Apprentice will be responsible for assisting the Farm Director lead daily operations on the farm and training youth in basic farm operations. The Farm Apprentice will be expected to ensure that tasks are completed with excellence. The Farm Apprentice will have 2-3 weeks of training prior to the start of summer program. In addition, the Farm Apprentice will receive daily guidance from Farm Director and weekly feedback as a group. The Farm Apprentice will be expected to communicate daily with Farm Director and Youth Crew Leaders.”
Educational Opportunities: "As an apprenticeship, this position is meant to be a source of education for the applicant. Upon completing the summer, the Farm Apprentice will have experience in all aspects of a sustainable produce operation from basic farm tasks to marketing and day to day management. One thing unique about MVF is that we use soil, aquaponic, and hydroponic growing methods which allows for a wide breadth of experiences. "
Skills Desired: "Applicants must have prior experience working with teenagers, interest in community service and multicultural team building. Experience working on a farm is not required, but an interest in sustainable agriculture is essential. The Farm Apprentice must be open to one?s own personal growth and the capability to uphold the standards of the community. We are looking for someone who enjoys working on a team, while is independent, dependable, organized, flexible, and has a sense of humor. At least one year of college is preferred."
