“The positions are for full-time employment and are paid hourly. Pay is commensurate with experience. The work week is a 40-hour, five day week, with rotating responsibility with the rest of the crew to help us at the Saturday Nevada City Farmers' Market (1 in four weeks). The day starts each morning at 6 a.m. in the heart of summer, with one hour off for rest and lunch at mid-day.
All employees get one week of unpaid vacation after the beginning of August.”
Educational Opportunities: "This position provides an opportunity for an experienced former intern or employee to further develop farming skills and knowledge while being paid a regular salary. We aim to have weekly planning meetings during most of the season and you will have the opportunity to work side by side with an experienced farmer and the rest of our experienced crew. Depending on your prior experience and skill level, there may be meaningful opportunities to gain more responsibility on our farm, but all of us plant, cultivate and harvest. There is an emphasis on our farm on economic sustainability, and you will become familiar with the rationale for decision-making on our farm as it relates to crop choice, markets, and sales."
Skills Desired: "The preferred applicant will have at least one year of prior full-time experience as an intern or employee on a diversified vegetable farm, and can demonstrate increased responsibility over time. A commitment to work the whole season is required, and preference will be given to those applicants that are looking for a position that provides a longer term opportunity of multiple seasons. Preference will be given to applicants that have worked at least one full season on a commercial farm, as well as having prior experience with greenhouse work to produce transplants, irrigation layout, direct seeding and transplant planting, cultivation and weeding, harvest, quality control, and retail sales. To enrich the overall experience for everyone involved, we look for a broad range of unique work experience, interests and skills. We value your ability to work and your respect for physical labor, as well as your practical and analytical intelligence. Your experience will be the most rewarding if, in addition to enjoying physical work, you are observant, communicative, and curious. Previous Farmer's Market sales experience is a plus. You will also be working in a very social work environment, and must enjoy working cooperatively with the farmer and crew. Farming requires stamina and a high level of tolerance for repetitive tasks while always paying attention to the details."
