Internship informationGeneral Farm Description: Autumn Olive Farms is a small sustainable farm using innovative farming practices to birth and raise award winning heritage breed animals outdoors year round. We raise multiple heritage breeds of pigs, along with an assortment of pets including goats, dogs, and llamas. We deliver to customers every week ranging from Michelin 3 star Restaurants to local country stores. The farm's goal has always been to raise healthy high quality animals in a way that respects them and the ground they are raised on. We then seek out chefs and butchers who continue that chain of appreciation that we put in motion here on the farm from the time these animals are born. Large paddocks of forage, pasture, and hardwoods allow for carbon sequestering and a truly green and sustainable farm practice.

Hiring full time and/or part time employee(s) to be a part of the team at AOF. Starting base pay of $13+/hr for 90 days. At 90 days skills and roles will be established and pay will be negotiated based on that. In most circumstances in full time work you will be expected to work 40-50 hours a week. There is a wide variety of work to be done and a great opportunity to work on a small farm raising the finest artisan pigs in Virginia that are sold in Michelin Star Restaurants. We are a complete farm to fork model as we start with specific genetics, a breeding program, birth, raise, butcher, sales and delivery of these products.
Farm Work: Applicants must be able to problem solve while also being attentive, focused, and hard working. Common sense is a vital characteristic for safety and productivity. Applicant must have deep respect for the animals and basic manual labor skills. Safe and efficient equipment operating skills are required. Operating farm machinery is dangerous and taken very seriously, this is a full time farm working environment. Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions year round.
The farm work includes sorting/moving pigs of all sizes, birthing, vaccinations, all health care, bedding, maintaining watering systems, feeders, electric fencing, and farm equipment. Applicants need to be able to drive a truck with livestock trailers from 16’-32’, dump truck, and tractors.
Processing: We do a lot of work on the butchering/delivery side of things with hands on butchering/packaging, making local deliveries, pulling orders, and maintaining inventory. The applicant needs to be flexible on schedule since the needs and schedule are can change. Those involved in the butchering/packing need to be able to stay out of town in a hotel overnight(provided) for pickup/delivery. A solo delivery driver would need to be able to be trusted to handle a 20ft refrigerated box truck with lift gate by themselves(No CDL required).
We do not currently have housing to offer. Employees typically bring their lunch to work. There is an employee refrigerator/freezer to share these meats you will be helping to raise with your family at home. Paid Vacations and Holidays for full time employees. There is a vibrant farm to table movement that has been growing in Virginia and this is a great opportunity to be on the leading edge.
