General Farm Description: Big Sage Organics is a WSDA certified organic, diversified produce farm located in central Washington state’s Columbia Basin farming region. We sell produce through various markets including a local farm to table program, farmers markets, local direct to retail sales, local restaurants and regional wholesale markets. Interns will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of organic vegetable production along with the challenges and benefits associated while working in a team focused farming environment. For the 2019 season BSO will produce on approximately 15 acres for fresh produce sales. BSO also manages an acre of small stone fruit orchard. This program is administered and directed by individuals who have apprenticed and interned themselves in this exact manner and have a good understanding of expectations. We have a passion for growing and hope to share it with you!

Internship Details:

We are currently seeking seasonal farm interns to join our team in 2019. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone who is interested in learning about vegetable farming. You do not need experience to volunteer. Interns will work within a team alongside our experienced farm team. The on farm housing is also communal so we ask that interns be willing to live cohesively and be respectful of others. Farming is labor intensive so we ask interns to be prepared to work in occasional uncomfortable weather doing tasks that may be challenging for beginning farmers.

Educational Opportunities: You will get the opportunity to learn about greenhouse growing & management, planting/harvesting/weed control, crop rotation, cover cropping, organic/integrated pest management, post-harvest handling & packaging, and irrigation. This is a working knowledge opportunity. Vast majority of education will be through hands on experience. There will also be reading and discussions involved through working groups. Your learning experience will include all decision making processes from planning to delivering product and everything in between.

Skills Desired: No Experience Required

Meals: Meals are the responsibility of the intern. Interns will have access to all fresh produce on the farm, eggs, and occasional beef.
