General Farm Description: Farm Description: Big Sage Organics is a WSDA certified organic, diversified produce farm located in central Washington States Columbia Basin Farming Region. Offering produce through various markets including a local farm to table program, farmers markets, local direct to retail sales, local restaurants and regional wholesale markets. Interns will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of organic vegetable production along with the challenges and benefits associated therein while working in a team focused farming environment. BSO will produce 20 types of vegetables on 14 acres for fresh produce sales and manages a small stone fruit orchard just coming into production. This program is administered and directed by individuals who have apprenticed and interned themselves in this exact manner and have a good understanding of expectations.

Task Summary:
Interns will be required to work 30-40 hours per week. They will be part of farm production crew working closely each day with an experienced crew leader to complete seasonal tasks in the field; including but not limited to, greenhouse management, planting, orchard management, weed control, irrigation, disease control, pest control, harvesting, packing, distribution, machinery and technology application and more. Interns will also participate, in limited capacity, in ongoing farm planning, organic certification process and compliance, GAP certification process and compliance, farmers markets, shop work, production meetings and general farm upkeep as well as undertake one farm related project. The experience is designed to give individuals the opportunity to participate in many different aspects of building towards and maintaining a sustainable farm model. The focus, like the farming process, will center around vegetable production and individuals should be prepared to work outdoors in various weather conditions doing physically demanding work. While primarily acting as part of the field crew getting products to market, individuals will be given insight into all aspects of organic vegetable production. Farm work takes a hardy self-motivated individual willing and able to work long, hard days.


Educational Opportunities: This is a working knowledge opportunity. Vast majority of education will be through hands on experience. There will also be reading and discussions involved through working groups. Your learning experience will include all decision making processes from planning to delivering product and everything in between.

Skills Desired: None experience required.

Meals: Meals will be the responsibility of intern. Interns will have access to all food produced on farm.

Stipend: $400/month
