Internship informationGeneral Farm Description: Charlestown Farm is a sustainable vegetable and small fruit farm located 30 miles northwest of Philadelphia in Phoenixville, PA. At the heart of our Farm is our 150-member non-certified organic CSA, beginning its 20th year of operation. We also participate in a highly successful local farmers' market (www.phoenixvillefarmersmarket.org). Sustainability is key in our lives, our soils and our systems. We seek to reconnect people to their food source and the quality of locally grown and raised food. The farm consists of 40 acres with 18 acres currently in cultivation. Our two 30’ by 120’ allows us to grow year round.

Number of Internship Available: 2-4
Application Deadline: Rolling Basis
Minimum Length of Stay: 2 months
Duties include all aspects of farm work: seeding, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, washing, CSA distribution, Farmers’ Market sales, and working with our small flock of hens. We work 5 days per week at the farm, 1 Saturday/month at the Farmers’ Market, and 1 weekend/month on chore rotation. Our days can be long, especially in the late spring and summer, and we work hard (as all farmers do) during that time, however we strive to always have a balanced approach to work. Sustainable farming includes sustainable living and we try to ensure that we have plenty of time for rest. This is a great opportunity for someone serious about farming as a career, as you will learn many vital skills that will serve you in the future. Many of our apprentices have gone on to manage other farms or start farms of their own.
Educational Opportunities: One of our highest priorities is to provide apprentices comprehensive sustainable farming education from planning and seeding to weed management, soil fertility, harvest and crop planning. Apprentices will receive a farm plan that maps out the entire season. They will also participate in weekly field walks to learn how to develop a farm work plan.
Skills Desired: First and foremost we seek interns with a strong desire to learn about growing great vegetables as members of our farm team. Prior experience at a working farm and/or greenhouse is preferred, but not required. An ideal candidate is self-motivated, physically fit and likes to work outdoors. Our apprenticeship requires an excellent work ethic: organization, attention to detail, high integrity, energy, enthusiasm, effective communication skills and the ability to work in all weather conditions and finally, a sense of humor. We all like to laugh while we work!
Meals: We do not provide meals, but apprentices receive vegetables and eggs from the farm.
Stipend: Monthly stipend is flexible and commensurate with relevant experience, plus additional pay for working the farmers market once a month. Base pay for full season apprentice $1,100/month
Housing: Housing is provided in a lovely renovated stone carriage house with a large gourmet kitchen, washer/dryer, dishwasher, grill, and utilities included. We also have a lovely pond and hiking trails around the property and through adjoining park land. The house has high speed Internet for apprentice's use.
