General Farm Description: "Crimson Sage Nursery is a small Woman -owned business and homestead located in Orleans, CA tucked in the beautiful Klamath river valley of NE Humboldt County.Our primary focus is our certified organic medicinal herb nursery where we propagate and grow 350 plus species of medicinal herbs. The plants are shipped nation -wide through our on-line store <br /><br /> We also plant a large home garden which is in permanent raised beds, and have a diverse home orchard, and berries. We have a flock of laying hens, a few ducks,one dog and 3 cats all packed into our mini-homestead. I have been involved with growing food and propagating and growing medicinal herbs for over 30 years."

Internship Details:

You will be expected to help out 3 day per Week during our busier season March through June dropping to 2 days a week as things slow in the summer plus some help with animal chores on your workdays and occasional caretaking. You will be involved with all aspects of the nursery business as well as helping to plan and grow a home food garden and planting a few medicinals for harvesting and seed saving.. There will also be opportunities get familiar with Herb Crafting through my extensive herbal library and quite a lot of herbs available for medicine making !It is important that folks understand your work days will be primarily focused on the Plant Nursery !

Educational Opportunities: "We are definitely not an Herb school but there is plenty of opportunity for self -Study using my extensive herbal library,making use of herbs growing all over the property and learning to ID and the uses of all the plants we grow as we work with them! This work exchange is best suited to someone already having some herbal knowledge who really wants to immerse into the plant side of herbal medicine as we propagate and grow and ship out over 300 different medicinals. You will also have the opportunity to learn all that is involved with an online business as well as what is involved with shipping a perishable plant!!. "

Skills Desired: "I am looking preferably for one woman or a couple who want to share a small space. Someone with a strong interest in medicinal herbs, a strong love of plants and a desire to learn all aspects of plant propagation. Some experience working with plants is helpful. Computer skills and a desire to learn the details of running a small business is important. someone who is comfortable sharing space with others , is easy going and flexible living around others, Someone who can be self starting ,take initiative and work alone or with groups and can handle working amongst some chaos at times during our very busy spring season. Someone who enjoys animals and can handle working in all types of weather conditions it can be very hot herein summer and sometimes cold in the early season packing shed !! Someone who can handle long hours standing and doing work that can be very repetitive and can also lift 50 pounds if needed. I like to vary what we do if at all possible but there will be long days of potting on , prepping and packing plants at the height of the season. A person with a good sense of humor ,an open mind, positive attitude and easy going nature combined with a sincere love of plants is ideal! "

Meals: We share a mid day meal on our workdays otherwise you are independent in your cabin .

Stipend: yes we will be offering some compensation

Housing: "We have a small 1-room well insulated cabin perfect for one person it has electricity, a small kitchen with a propane range/oven a small fridge running cold water, internet access , a covered deck and access to an outhouse and a shared shower. We prefer no pets. The cabin is well insulated with a good space heater for cold nights .We have a separate laundry room with Washer and Dryer and we cover all the utilities."
