General Farm Description: We are a small scale diversified organic market garden growing vegetables. We implement human scaled farming practices focusing on regenerative growing practices of minimal soil disturbances, composting, crop rotation, cover cropping, and promoting biodiversity. We grow on about an acre and a half footprint. This affords us the ability to intensively and efficiently manage the land. We just built another greenhouse and high tunnel. Now we have two greenhouses and 8 high tunnels. These tunnels allow us to extend our season and focus on high value trellised crops like tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers and leafy greens. We distribute almost all of our produce on-site at our farm market and roadside stand. The rest is donated to local organizations working to address food insecurity. The market garden is located on a 342 acre preserved farm in Long Valley, NJ. We hope to help the next generation of farmers through training and possible future low cost land leasing opportunity on a 100 acre plot in development on our farm. Our goal is to provide very affordable land access to future farmers providing some shared infrastructure The farm project was started by Dr. Weiss a primary care physician specializing in lifestyle medicine. We believe in a farm-based healthcare system, where health emanates literally, from the ground up. From the 2500-year-old Hippocratic teaching, farm-based healthcare recognizes that food is the most powerful medicine. These “living medicines” are the essential tools utilized by the lifestyle primary care physician to prevent and reverse the chronic diseases that plague our society today. Dr. Weiss sees patients at his medical practice located on the farm property.

Internship Details:

We are looking for two interns to work with us for the upcoming growing season.  You will be joining a crew of three farmers who have been working together for several seasons.  The main growing season for us is May through November.  Interns will be provided the necessary training and instruction to be a successful and skilled member of the farming operation.  Highly adaptable and eager candidates with a passion for learning are often the most successful.

The work schedule is typically Monday through Friday from 8am to 4:30pm with an hour lunch break usually at noon.  We start earlier and also end earlier during the summer.  Interns will be encouraged to work one farm market a week.  This gives you the opportunity to engage with the community.  We have two markets a week on Friday and Saturday.  We rotate the staff to work a Saturday market every other week.  During those weeks they will take a weekday off.  This allows interns to keep a five day workweek.  We believe in a farm-life balance!

Interns will be involved in most of the tasks needed to successfully run our market garden.  This includes but not limited to seed starting, greenhouse management, bed preparation, trellising, cultivating, operating a BCS walk behind tractor, transplanting, seeding with our Jang mechanical seeder, irrigation, harvesting, wash/packing of vegetables, and market staffing.  Often interns will be working in a group with other farm staff members.  We have a fast-paced work environment but we like to have fun too!  Please feel free to reach out with any questions you may have.  We hope to hear from you!

Educational Opportunities: As a farm crew member you will learn the ins and outs of an efficient small-scale market garden. We strive to share the overall systems that make us successful. We encourage interns to connect with other farms and farmers through attending C.R.A.F.T. tours. This gives you the ability to learn from other growers and farm businesses. We usually attend a couple tours as a crew every season. We hope to host one this upcoming season!

Skills Desired: No farming experience is required but it is preferred. Similar work experience like landscaping, trail crew, or construction is helpful. We are looking for people with a passion for growing food and environmental and human health. A candidate must be adaptable and resilient with a desire to learn about regenerative growing practices. A person who is physically strong and fit with good communication skills and attention to detail will thrive.

Meals: No, but workers are encouraged to eat produce from the farm. We also provide bulk staples like grains, legumes, oil, and spices to supplement the farm fresh veggies.
