Internship Details:

Our schedule is based on farm priorities. Members farm time will be divided on the farm learning: seeding, weeding, picking/harvesting, transplanting, commercial store produce packaging/delivering, our farmers market booths and more.

Also, Farmelot is surrounded by many outdoor recreational opportunities; swimming (river and creek right down the road), hiking, bike riding, downtown Chico bars/restaurants, farming and much more. We are located a short 15 minute drive or 1 1/2 hour bike ride to Chico, home of Chico State University & the beautiful Bidwell Park.

Educational Opportunities: At our farmers markets, you will learn the principles of retailing and food artistry. Farmelot also provides sustainable food to local food cooperatives, restaurants and grocery stores. You will have the opportunity to learn quality standards required for commercial accounts by sorting, boxing and delivering. Currently Farmelot is developing and implementing farming strategies for sustainable local food necessary to meet the challenges of climate change. Learn from the best at our main location with Farmer James. He has been growing food his whole life and is known for his resourceful farming techniques. At our secondary location where you will occasionally visit, Bruce Balgooyen PhD, has spent a lifetime in small and medium scale vegetable farming and traditional plant breeding, having consulted for several seed companies. He presently is consultant for the Chico State University organic vegetable farming operation. For many years, James and Dr. Bruce have been providing fresh nutritious quality local food. You will learn and apply farm fundamentals, principles of self-sufficiency and self-reliance.

Meals: Members of Farmelot take turns cooking lunch. The other times meals can be made and/or shared with as much of our farm fresh produce as you like. Basic food staples like beans, rice, spices, oils, eggs and bread are provided. Other foods can be traded at the markets or you purchase on your own. During the warm season we all share in weekly farm bbq's.

Stipend: DOE and position.

Housing: Private rooms or tiny house - depending on what's available. Use of bath house (2 showers, 2 toilets) and full sheltered kitchen w/pantry. Fire pit. Cleanliness and tidiness required. Off-site living acceptable.
