Internship Details:

We are seeking one person to join our crew as soon as possible to commit to the remainder of our 2019 farm season, with opportunities to extend/grow within our company if the season goes well. Our new farmhand will assist with morning/afternoon livestock chores, poultry processing, farmer’s markets, product delivery, egg boxing, vegetable gardening (for personal use), farm upkeep, occasional dog care, and other relevant projects as they arise. We have a fun crew of 3 full-time farmers who all live on the farm and one part-time farm owner who lives nearby. A strong sense of community is something all of our farmhands have enjoyed. We highly recommend you peruse our website, www.freeuniongrassfarm.com, for specifics on what we do, how we do it, and to make sure we are the right farm fit for you. Also check out our Instagram accounts, @freegrassfarmer and @shefarmsinfreeunion, for a look at daily life on the farm.

Educational Opportunities: We teach strong competency in daily care of rotation of cattle, broiler chickens, laying hens, ducks, pigs, and geese. Farmhands are involved with all of our daily operations on the farm, extending into sales and marketing of the products we raise here. We teach the full scope of skills required to bring a sustainably raised product to market and sell it for a profit. No one on our farm works in just one area - we believe knowing how to do everything will leave you better equipped to start an operation of your own one day, should that be your interest.

Skills Desired: No experience required but successful applicants must be forward-thinking, positive, observant, and enjoy working with animals. Required: -Valid driver's license and your own vehicle (we live 25 minutes from town) -Ability to commit to the full remaining 2019 season -Sturdy work shoes and waterproof boots -Ability to work long hours with some very early mornings -Ability to lift 50lbs -Ability to work in all weather conditions -At least 21 years of age -Must have a smart phone - we communicate regularly using the Slack app and use our phones as Square registers at markets. We (over)compensate for data usage. Preferred: -Omnivores -Dog lovers (we have 3) -Some knowledge of sustainable, regenerative agriculture -Some familiarity with meat cuts / cooking methods -Some sales experience

Meals: Lunch provided on processing days and occasional shared dinners with farm crew.

Stipend: $800 monthly stipend plus meat, eggs, and veggies. We eat well! All of our farmhands have begun their time here with an internship stipend and have moved up to hourly or salaried positions after their first successful season, so there is room to grow. Although farmhand living costs are low (no commute, most food provided) please carefully consider whether or not this stipend is adequate for your needs before applying. We will not be able to accommodate schedule-change requests should you choose to pursue other part-time work.

Housing: On-farm housing with private room, shared bathroom in a house shared with other farmers. Full access to kitchen, fast wifi and all utilities included.

Preferred method of Contact: Email
