Job Title: Livestock Apprentice
Reports To: Associate Director, Livestock Operation
FLSA Exemption Status: Non-Exempt
Regular Work Hours: March 13 – December 15, 2023. Position is 40 hours/week, not including an additional 5 hours of unpaid instruction, M-F with rotating weekend chores. The manager tracks hours on a spreadsheet to ensure they are not exceeded. Start times vary by season.
Compensation: $650 per week ($16.25 per hour); private room in a shared house; $400 in a Healthcare Reimbursement Account; 60 hours of classroom based education; free Glynwood vegetables; and a 40% discount on Glynwood meat and Farm Store products.
Paid Time off: Apprentices earn 6 vacation days and 3 sick days.

Overview: Do you think that producing high quality, regenerative, pastured-proteins is a valuable contribution to your community? Have you taken the first few steps along the path to owning or managing a regenerative livestock operation? If so, Glynwood’s on-farm livestock apprenticeship may be for you! Designed for aspiring livestock farmers with some previous experience, our apprenticeship program will take your skills to the next level through a 10-month program of “learning-as-you-go” in our Animal Welfare-Approved livestock operation that will enhance your understanding of the principles and practices of regenerative, pasture-based production of beef, pork, lamb and poultry products.
Glynwood’s Apprenticeship program will ask a lot of you. Apprentices work full-time on the livestock farm team, participate in all educational offerings, complete regular assessments of their skills and progress towards program goals, and are encouraged to participate in Glynwood-led events, networks, and other programs. Apprentices are also expected to support Glynwood’s culture of philanthropy by contributing to story-telling projects led by our development and communications team.
Job Summary: On a daily basis, this Apprentice position takes direction from the Associate Director, Livestock Operation and the Assistant Livestock Manager, and works with others on all aspects of Glynwood’s livestock operation. The apprentice is expected to participate in bi-weekly educational programs and other educational activities, including directed readings, occasional evening presentations, and farm visits throughout the Hudson Valley region.
Essential Job Duties
- Provide day-to-day care for all species of livestock on the farm: cattle, sheep, hogs and poultry. Must be willing and able to handle all species.
- Monitor breeding and birthing
- Care for sick and injured animals
- Participate in livestock record keeping
- Fence installation and repair
- Maintain livestock infrastructure and tools
- Pasture maintenance
- Manure management
- Digitize record keeping logs on a rotating monthly basis
- Uphold high aesthetic standards so that farm office, barns, pastures, etc. always look neat and in top condition
Apprentices receive in-field training from dedicated mentors in each of the above core competencies.

Most of the work is performed outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, but some indoor time is required for education.
This is a physically active role. The Livestock Apprentice must be able and willing to:
- Lift and move small animals
- Herd large animals
- Lift and move bales, feed, etc.
- Perform other physical activities as needed for performance of livestock work
- Work steadily outdoors in heat, cold, rain, and wind. (Working outdoors is not required when conditions are hazardous to human health.)
- Own appropriate attire for physical activities (durable clothing, sun protection)
Travel and Weekend Work
- Because livestock needs to be tended daily, the Associate Director, Livestock Operation will make up a rotating weekend schedule for the livestock crew, including apprentices.
- Apprentices participate in field trips off site, and may attend one or more conferences that require overnight stays.
Required Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED
- Must have some livestock farming experience, such as one year’s employment or an internship on a farm
- Valid US Driver License in good standing
